May 24 Associated Press dispatch notes Havel authorities seek clarity on Spanish fleet. Schley moves east toward Santiago as rumors of a second squadron swirl. Blockade of northern Cuba continues, with cautious signals from Sampson and advancing naval activity.
A U S gunboat arrived at Key West with Hayden Jones and Charles Thrall, two American newspaper correspondents captured by Spaniards in Cuba, exchanged for Lieut. Col. Cortijo, Surgeon Major Julian, and two Spanish servants. The Spanish prisoners were taken to Havana aboard the Maple, then Jones and Thrall were transferred to the Woodbury and brought to the U S port. The exchange occurred offshore yesterday.
Chicago reports Reuters rumor of Sampson fleet defeated at Santiago and Sampson killed is false. Emporia obituary records Rev. Daniel Read LL D pastor of Los Angeles First Baptist Church dies after illness at his daughter’s home. Osawatomie Graphic publishes Col. O E Learnard address in editorial issue this week. Mr A Goldberg spent yesterday with the Levy.
A Montreal dispatch says two more US secret service detectives arrived and guards are kept on the Spanish consulate and the Spaniards in Quebec. Canadian agents say they located Semurtou Huec and Lieut Carranys in private flats. Polo and companions left Windour with Carrante and Wu Bose driving away.
The president rode by train to Camp Alger to review troops with Alger Miles and Secretary Porter, accompanied by their families. No major news reached the White House by noon. Rumors of Sampson's Heel destruction and the admiral's death were dismissed. The president will not attend Memorial Day ceremonies at Richmond but will go to Arlington National Cemetery for services.
The United States auxiliary cruiser Harvard arrived in Jamaica this morning after parting from the American fleet at noon yesterday. Around a dozen American warships patrol near Santiago De Cuba and the Spanish fleet, including Cervera’s force, remains largely unclear. Harvard is believed to carry important dispatches for naval authorities in Washington.
The Dandy carried a navy officer messenger with cables to Consul Dent hare for transmission to the American fleet. The ship sailed from Port Marias on the Jamaica north coast last night. Dispatches for Schley are believed to be of great importance.
The U S despatch boat Eagle arrived at Port Antonio last evening to take on forty eight tons of coal and sail today. In Kingston on May 28 reports say twelve American war ships are outside Santiago de Cuba harbor with the Spanish fleet believed to be inside.

Maprio May 28 The Spanish reserve squadron commanded by Camara has departed Cadiz and will maneuver in the open sea for several days before sailing to the Philippine islands Cuba or the United States. The force is estimated at ten to twelve vessels. New York May 28 A London despatch to the World reports Cadiz dockyard shows Pelayo Emperador Icamos V, one torpedo boat, Patriotia and Rapido, with the Pelayo condemned and others out fitted with pins and without screws. no immediate sailing is believed.

King F E Greene and H Gray Otis to report for duty with Merritt for the Philippines expedition. Includes high school alumni banquet report and various local notices from Leavenworth Kansas area with names and dates May 26 95 and May 28 95.
Navy despatch from Cavite dated May 26 via Hong Kong May 27 says no change in the blockade situation at Manila. It notes Manila residents cannot buy provisions except rice. Olympia captain Gridley is condemned by medical survey and ordered home, with leaves by Occidental and Oriental ates from Hong Kong on the 28th. Commander Lambert appointed commander of Olympia. Dewar.
May 26 report falsely claimed the United States cruiser Haltimera Saint Mani 8 was damaged by an internal explosion. The auxiliary cruiser arrived with provisions and reports a full American fleet at Cavite. A claim that ships sailed to Iloilo near Elcano is incorrect. Aguinaldo is with insurgents between the Americans and Spanish forces.
A World dispatch from Manila dated May 28 reports Dewey's blockade fully complete, insurgents encircling the city on land and cutting land communication. Inhabitants of Manila grow desperate amid worsening starvation as the siege tightens.
Wasmarox May 20 Secretary Long received a cable from Dewey noting illness of Captain Gridley and two other officers who have been invalided and will be sent home.
A partly garbled May report from Hayti claims an important American success by the Buccets of the American Fleet but offers no confirmation. The town notes the rumor followed the reported arrival of the Japanese fleet at Santiago de Cuba, with cables to Santiago said to be uninterrupted.
