The Senate approved a $1.5 billion public works package for immediate and standby spending as part of Kennedy's New Frontier program. The compromise, passed 44 to 32, leaves House Republicans poised for a tougher fight on the measure.
Washington APAn Agriculture Department official testified that private accountant Winn Jackson destroyed his working papers after a call from an Estes organization member. The net worth statement valuing Estes at 13.7 million aided a bond increase amid fraud indictments and broad investigations into Estes enterprises.
The National Safety Council reports the first four months of 1962 saw a six percent rise in traffic deaths from 1961, with April reaching a record 3 10 fatalities. Chicago had the lowest rate among cities over a million, while Los Angeles reported 12 deaths and a 3.0 rate per 10 000 vehicles. Detroit Philadelphia and New York posted 3.3 3.3 and 4.9 rates respectively with 67 60 and 236 fatalities.

A boiler explosion at the Hastings Nebraska Consumers Cooperative ammonia plant injured seven workers. Two men were released, three suffered serious burns and required hospitalization. total damage estimated at 25 thousand dollars. The Hastings plant, opened three months ago, will run at 30 percent capacity for two weeks during repairs.
Mrs. Jennie Bowersock former Acacia housemother at Iamsas University died at her Napa California home last Thursday at age 84. Funeral services will be held at Treadway and Wigper Funeral Home in Napa followed by cremation. Ashes of her daughter will be buried here later. She was born in Burlington Town and widow of Wilbur F. E. Bowersock former Lawrence Paper Co. superintendent. Survivors include two sons Justin Bowersock of Mission and Laurence H. Bowersock of Napa, a sister Mrs Kanma Leight of Seattle, two grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

KU events announce Dr. and Mrs. Wescoe hosting guests with the weekend climax at Memorial Stadium at 7 p.m. Regents Reed and Clement Hall and Dr. Wescoe will award degrees. Five alumni will receive Distinguished Service Citations. Outdoor concerts are scheduled, the commencement band performs at 4 p.m. Sunday and 2 p.m. Monday on Myers Hall lawn. Three days of bus tours depart from the Union as part of vacation package planning.
Four county 4-H broiler and garden show at the Douglas County 4-H Fairgrounds announced placings. Participants from Douglas Johnson Leavenworth and Wyandotte counties competed in poultry roilers and garden exhibits with numerous blue red and white ribbons.
President Kennedy plans a quiet 45th birthday at Glen Ora with family. Family wealth from trust funds and bonds, managed by Joseph Kennedy, is noted with an estimated total between 3 and 4 million dollars for the 45th birthday share. The plan includes the Kennedy family, Eunice Shriver, Jean Smith, and Robert Kennedy. Memorial Day will be spent at Glen Ora before returning to the White House.
In Chicago a Greyhound passenger identified as Milo Savo Brekich 27 of San Francisco fatally stabbed the driver and two others before police shot him after he refused to drop a knife on the Congress Expressway West Side. Two victims hospitalized.
