Carpenter says triple orbit not confusing no fatigue

Astronaut Malcolm Scott Carpenter says he did not become confused or tired during his third orbit of the earth and was preoccupied with many tasks. He critiqued a Hawaii station report that he seemed tired while recounting the events of the Aurora 7 flight and his drifting flight.

Market Crash Deepens As Ticker Tape Lags

New York AP reports a severe market nosedive with the tape delayed by over an hour. Blue chips tumbled as AT&T fell over 11 points IBM down more than 17 and Du Pont over 8 amid widespread selling from across the country.

Remains found in Atlantic search for missing C133

Air Force units found two deflated life rafts with no survivors and what appeared to be part of a C133 Cargomaster while scanning the Atlantic for the missing aircraft with six aboard. Coast Guard cutters moved toward the area after takeoff from Dover Air Force Base en route to the Azores.

Northeast Kansas Weather Summary With Rainfall Report

Scattered thunderstorms tonight and early Tuesday with locally heavy rains this evening. Temperature readings show highs around 80 to 85 and lows in the 60s NE Kansas. Record highs reached 90 in 1942 and 1969 with a low of 35 in 1947. Rainfall totaled .75 inches overnight and .22 inches Saturday.

Boulder Welcomes Astronaut Malcolm Carpenter Homecoming

Boulder Colorado readies for a full celebration as astronaut Malcolm Scott Carpenter returns. City officials and Governor McNichols join the welcome, with a motorcade through downtown and a Denver Memorial Day parade to follow. Carpenter, born in Boulder 37 years ago, will stay briefly in a local hotel before departing for Langley Virginia.

Two Escape Bloody Spree On Saturday

Unionville Iowa residents were told to expect a house to house search as peace officers hunted Gayne Gilbert Smith 24 for a serial family slaying spree that left six relatives dead and one wounded. The man linked to the killings fled toward a Lee Moffitt farm amid a jet crash coincidence. The suspect after a dance outing allegedly killed relatives including Andrew R McBeth 50 and Dora 42 and their children Amos 19 Anna Katherine 19 and Donna Jean Kellogg 19 while 6 month old Perry slept unharmed. Patsy Lou 15 survived wounded and alerted authorities. The pursuit followed a lengthy sequence from a Saturday dance to a midnight farm halt with Smith fleeing on foot after car gas ran out. Smith formerly of Hastings Nebraska and later Denver Colorado is believed to be armed with a .410 shotgun and rifle ammo.

Child to have surgery after Lawrence County wreck

Harold Carlson Jr., 34 months, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Carlson, was to undergo surgery at Kansas University Medical Center for a skull fracture from a three vehicle crash Saturday night seven miles northwest of Lawrence on Robert Steele road. A passenger in the Carlson car, he was injured when the vehicle was sideswiped by Harold Hudson of Lecompton. Ed Bond, a state game protector, and Linda Bowen, 16, suffered injuries. Bowen was released after overnight treatment. Damage totaled $1,100. Police reported light rain at the scene.

Moisture from an approaching system may mix with weekend precipitation to aid May’s drought recovery. Northeast Kansas faces scattered storms and heavy rain late today into tonight with partly cloudy skies later through Tuesday. Tonight lows in the 60s, Tuesday highs near 80s to mid 80s.

Lightning Destroys Three Buildings Near Eudora

Lightning struck near Eudora early today destroying a two story house a barn and a shed. Mr and Mrs Ralph Nuttall escaped with only a papers box as fire spread rapidly from floor to house then barn and shed. Fire knocked out a telephone line delaying help. Nuttall saved a parked truck. fire consumed most belongings and left the home nearly 100 years old. The couple plan to stay with relatives while assessing losses and insurance.

Estes Payments Tie to Eisenhower Era Grain Storage

A House subcommittee hearing revealed that most federal storage payments to Texas financier Billie Sol Estes came from grain stored before 1961.
