Papyrus boat voyage begins with Heyerdahl heading for the Americas
Thor Heyerdahl set sail in the 55 foot papyrus raft Ra from Morocco toward the Canary Islands with six companions to test Egyptian seafaring to the New World. The crew includes Norman Baker Yuri Denkevitch George Sourial Abdoulaye Dibrine Carlo Mauri and Santiago Cenoves. The craft uses a sail and oars and carries limited modern gear a monica and books. The voyage aims to demonstrate possible contact 5000 years ago though experts doubt long viability and expect waterlogging.
