Astronaut White Set for Space Walk on June Third

Houston AP reports astronaut Edward H. White II is assigned to a Spacewalk planned for June 3 during Gemini 4. White will exit the spacecraft over Guaymas Mexico in the second orbit and float about 10 to 12 minutes before reentry over the Florida coast.

T. J. Johnson Elected Lawrence Jaycee President

T. J. Johnson of 804 Highland Dr was elected president of the Lawrence Junior Chamber of Commerce on Tuesday evening. Johnson is a district Chevrolet manager with headquarters for the northeast Kansas area in Lawrence. He and his family moved here in September and have two children, Erika and LaSane. Other officers elected Tuesday include Fred Johnson.

Three Hurt In City Wreck At 7th And Mass Streets

Three persons suffered injuries in two separate crashes Tuesday night. Arthur Sommer, 28, from 1414 E 19th St, was taken to Sedene Memorial Hospital. Robert S. McBride, 19, of 1042 Ohio St, was admitted to Watkins Memorial Hospital with bruises. Vehicle damage estimated at about 300 dollars.

Funnel Reports Not Confirmed In Lawrence Area

Conflicting reports emerged about funnel clouds near Lawrence. The Topeka Weather Bureau cited three funnels dipping from clouds east of Lawrence before noon but unverified by sheriff offices. No damage reported. Kansas City Weather Bureau suggested cloud fragments and light showers rather than active funnels.

Armstrong May Visit KU for 1966 Homecoming Concert

Preliminary plans show Louis Armstrong possible to perform October 30 at Allen Fieldhouse during KU Homecoming. Student Union Activities at Kansas University and Journal-World report interest but no contract or official announcement yet. Armstrong, 65, famed trumpeter and singer with a vast discography and film appearances.

KU Drama Schedule Announced for 1965 66

University Theatre at KU released its 1965 66 season under director Lewin Goff. The lineup features The Music Man with Tom Rea June 30–July 3, Escurial and A Day in the Life of the Author July 6–9, The Night of the Iguana July 13–16, and My Fair Lady Homecoming production October 22–24 and 29–31. The season includes tours, European previews, Children’s Theatre shows, and the final Centennial opera Carry Nation directed by Goff and Baustian.

Ambassador Grew Dies at His Home

Joseph Clark Grew, 84, former U S ambassador to Japan before Pearl Harbor, died at his Manchester home. He served nine years in Tokyo amid treaty violations and aggression. A 1943 State Department White Book cited his Jan 27 1941 cable predicting a surprise Pearl Harbor attack. He would have turned 85 on Thursday. Born to a wealthy Boston family, Grew was educated at Groton and Harvard.

Indian education and development programs urged by officer

The officer noted wealth and status inside and outside the reservation and warned that termination of the tribe could raise dependence on the federal government. He urged graduates to help build camps, marinas, and motels on reservations and promote preschool programs and increased Indian college scholarships.
