Douglas County Commission approved reducing speed limits on two rural roads near Lawrence. Following the recommendation of Public Works Director Keith Browning, commissioners agreed for safety reasons to post lower speeds on the two routes.
The road west of East 850 Road to Lecompton will have a permanent 35 mph speed limit and a 5 ton truck limit after Browning's recommendation. The scenic stretch south of the Kansas River currently lacks a posted limit, allowing 55 mph or reasonable speed. A 35 mph limit and 5 ton limit on North 1300 Road east of East 1700 Road were also made permanent, replacing temporary controls from South Lawrence Trafficway construction.
Shelley Hickman Clark and Karl Gridley receive awards for preserving territorial sites and cultural resources in Douglas County. Depot Redux founder Carey Maynard-Moody and Diane Stoddard led the Santa Fe Station restoration effort. Ceremony at the Cider Gallery features hors d oeuvres, tickets $30.
City of Lawrence sues landlords over alleged housing bias after a two minute initial rental discussion with Evans amid claims he is a disabled veteran. Landlords counter that records requests are harassment and that Evans and his dog posed safety risks to other tenants. Trial set for December in Douglas County District Court.
