City sales tax proposal gains support delaying ballot vote

City commissioners edge toward separate November votes on sales taxes to fund transit and streets. Mayor Dever backs a 0.15 percent transit tax and 0.35 percent street tax, while others push for a single measure. Budget talks address a $1 million transit funding shortfall and strained street maintenance amid higher materials costs.

Turnpike to build new westbound bridge near Lawrence

Construction will start next month on a westbound span north of the existing Lawrence bridge. When the new bridge opens likely in late 2009 all traffic moves to it, widening to handle east and westbound vehicles until a separate eastbound bridge is finished. The east toll plaza will close for eight months for a larger facility, then final work in 2011 restores two-way traffic along the corridor. Officials say end-of-life for current structures by 2012 drives the plan, with updates at SpanningTheFuture.com and email alerts. The project is expected to boost local economy by easing access on the turnpike.

Congress Enacts Farm Bill With Expanded Subsidies

Washington AP Congress enacted a massive farm bill with larger farm subsidies and more food stamps for the poor. Democrats overridden President Bush's veto for the second time in seven years as the House vote 316 108 and Senate 82 13 approved, but a printing error omitted international food aid funds. Pelosi labeled the omission an unprecedented error while Republicans dismissed the lapse as incompetence.
