Competing catchers meet in state tourney clash in Topeka

Free State High senior EJ Swanson and Lawrence High senior Chase Mader, longtime rivals who were teammates on a traveling club last summer, prepare to face off in the Class 6A state baseball tournament opener in Topeka. Each built as leaders on deep rosters, they bring grit, versatility and surprising power with Swanson batting .348 from the fifth spot and both handling varied pitching staffs with experience and intensity.
