Kansas University claims its 13th Big Eight track and field title in 16 years at Norman after rain-delayed 39th championships. Jim Ryan and Gary Ard lead KU with multiple wins including mile and 880. Ard delivers record long jump despite injuries as Nebraska and Oklahoma trail.
Norman Oklahoma State? The Kansas Jayhawks led by coach Bob Timmons seized a 13th outdoor Big Eight title in 16 years after a 1.43 inch rain delay. Ard led with a 26 04 long jump win and RYun anchored the mile relay as KU posted a balanced team effort.
Saturday's Kansas versus Kansas State game at Manhattan was rained out after the teams split a Friday doubleheader. Kansas finished 7-12 in the Big Eight with 12-15 overall, while KSU ended the season 9-8 in league play.
Yesterday's Stars PITCHING Mike Cuellar Houston scattered eight hits as the Astros topped San Francisco 2-0. BATTING Hank Aaron Atlanta collected two homers and two singles in four at-bats drove in four runs and scored three as the Braves whipped Pittsburgh 7-2.
