Park and school system proposed for Lawrence plan

A connected network of parks and schools plus preservation of scenic areas around Lawrence was proposed by Harland Bartholomew and Eldridge Lovelace at a Committee of 100 meeting in the South Park Recreation Center. The Schools Parks and Recreation preliminary report is the fifth in the Comprehensive Plan series for Lawrence.

Lawrence Commission Drops Block Missouri Resurfacing Plan

The Lawrence City Commission scrapped 800 block Missouri resurfacing while keeping 700 block Missouri and the 8th and Missouri intersection. Residents of the 800 block protested brick streets citing aesthetics and traffic, while the 700 block residents petitioned for resurfacing. The panel also approved a Navy Polaris missile display in Centennial Park and advanced several sewer, street, and park projects as part of the overall plan.

Beem Announces Candidacy for Douglas County Register of Deeds

Mrs. Janice Beem of Eudora, a Douglas County deputy in the register of deeds office the past six years, says she will run in the August Republican primary. Incumbent Harold A. Beck will not seek re election after 30 years in the post. Ernest Klooz, Mrs. Shirley Carter, and Edwin C. are also mentioned in the race.

KU Students face arson charges after jeep fire at KU

Preliminary hearings set for June 5 in County Court for Michael N. Calwell 23 of Bonner Springs and Jeremy W. Higgins 19 of Wichita charged with third degree arson in the May 9 KU police jeep fire behind Hoch Auditorium. Both posted 1500 bonds after arraignment. They swam Kaw River earlier this month amid other KU incidents.

Chairman Chosen To Head Kansas Physics Studies

A theoretical physicist from California University Davis will lead the Kansas University physics department. Prof. David B. Beard, 41, will replace J D Stranathan who retires after 23 years as chairman. Beard has worked with Teller on Project Sherwood and held roles at CU, Catholic University, and Lockheed, and he plans a new modern physics research center at KU. He and his wife have four children.

Austin Speaker Praises Kansas Lutheran Colleges At Convention

Austin a Kansas Board of Regents member and Salina Journal editor praised state and church colleges during the Central States Synod of the Lutheran Church in America dinner. He noted three honored presidents lead public institutions and stressed independence and religious education’s role. About 300 attended the four day convention at Trinity Lutheran Church as plans included a sermon by Rev. Marvin H. Lundeen and choir presentations. three graduates were ordained.
