False alarm ends Lawrence manhunt scare
Police and sheriff units from Lawrence and Kansas University, joined by Kansas Highway Patrol, launched a wide manhunt after a report that a man enticed a girl into a car. KU Suspends Two Students Over Jeep Fire

Zoning votes split on apartment, D zoning requests
Capacity fed petitions against both requests. The planning body approved C apartment zoning at 9th and Highland Dr but denied D zoning on Town by a 4 2 vote. Commissioners Getto Metzler Vogel and Wilson denied while Smith and Erhart did not deny. The majority reaffirmed not extending D zoning in that area. A D zoning request near 14th and Mass Sts faced opposition from neighbors and the Lawrence School Board. Knox cited concerns about noise and distractions near Central Junior High. The group approved rezoning from C to D-1 for several lots in Block 21 across from Lawrence Memorial Hospital, allowing the pharmacy to remain. Ambulance siren noise and safety prompted opposition to Ninth Street placement. the measure failed 4 5 with Getto voting no. Vogel and Erhart do not vote on board of zoning appeals. Other business included split lot approval for Starkey and final plat for Pioneer Ridge No 2. Departing Commissioner Wilson praised for sabbatical service at KU.

Richard Bailey a 31 year old Oklahoma native will take over next week as circulation manager for the Journal World succeeding Jack Mehaffey who leaves Lawrence to direct circuits for papers in Illinois and Indiana. Bailey grew up in Oklahoma City and worked on a paper route before attending Oklahoma University and serving in the U S Air Force. He comes to the Journal World from over nine years in the Daily Oklahoman and Times circulation department where he was district manager and later zone supervisor. Bailey is married with two children Randy 11 and Richard Lynn 2 and the family will move to Lawrence in June. He was introduced to Journal World carriers at a Wednesday meeting where Mehaffey praised their work.

Gillispie receives the Inland Daily Press Association Out standing Newspaperboy Award on National Newspaperboy Day. At Lawrence High he serves as student athletic team manager, gymnastics team member, and student leader. He plans to attend Kansas University and work at the Visual Education Department during the summer. The State Employment Security Division reports insured unemployment fell for several weeks. For the seven days ending May 16, 2.1 percent of those covered by unemployment compensation were receiving benefits, down from 2.2 percent the prior week and 2.3 percent a year ago.

Train collision kills crewman in Maryland yard crash
In Landover Maryland a yard locomotive engineer Harry Wayne Edwards 48 of Oxford died when two Pennsylvania Railroad freight trains collided near U S Route 50 and State Road 202 in Cheverly.
