Local students win numerous art and music awards

Marissa Wells and Vicky Adkins among scholarship recipients from Kiwanis Rotary. Bob Nitcher receives Marvel Holloway Art Award. Scholastic and language awards go to many students including Wendy Jackson, Kathy Pugh, Rita Haugh, and Don Watts. Journalism and creative writing prizes are announced along with band and orchestra scholarships and honors.

Knox to Speak To Baldwinites

Dr. Carl S. Knox will be featured speaker at the Baldwin High School Alumni Association reunion banquet at 6 30 p m Saturday in the Baker Student Union with over 250 reservations. Finalists Named Tonight in Miss Lawrence KU Pageant

Ten finalists were chosen Thursday night from 30 entries at Murphy Hall KU. About 300 attended as judges will announce finalists tonight at 8. The winner will represent Lawrence in July at Miss Kansas in Pratt and receive a $200 scholarship plus wardrobe. Debbie Bryant will emcee. Jan Monses will crown. The Winsome Side provide music.

Col John P Lanigan head of 1400 Leathernecks who took Hill 881 North will be KU Navy ROTC professor of naval science and commanding officer. He succeeds Navy Capt R H Eslinger Jr who moves to Norfolk to work on anti submarine defense. Col Lanigan served in World War II Korea and Vietnam and will relocate his wife Alice and sons to Lawrence.

Tobin to Head French And Italian Department

Ronald W. Tobin is named chairman of the Department of French and Italian at Kansas University after two years as acting head. He joined the Kansas faculty in 1963 and holds an M A and Ph D from Princeton. His studies include a Woodrow Wilson fellowship and a Fulbright to France.

Water fight at Sellards Hall and missing sewer cover item

Lawrence KU police quieted a water bag throwing incident at Sellards Hall around 11 10 p m Thursday. A sewer hole cover was stolen west of control station five on 14th Street, noted by a KU officer early this morning. The final day of Kansas University second semester classes is Thursday with finals starting next Friday and commencement set for June 3 to 5. A ninth grade dance at Central Junior High School runs tonight from 7 30 to 9 50 p m with dancing games and refreshments. Karen Flory Hendrix of Independence Missouri, a Miss Missouri winner and candidate for Miss U S A, competes in Miami Beach televised pageant at 9 p m Saturday. She is a KUCS freshman and daughter of local residents.

Summer Clinic at KU For Speech Problems
