Campaign issues and voting rights mix in 1944 sessions
In Washington, Representative Smith proposed investigating campaign expenditures by individuals, corporations or labor unions, aiming to reveal any illegal action. Shafer sought to outlaw foremen's unions after a Detroit-area walkout. South Carolina Democrats rejected a Progressive negro party bid for eight of 18 convention delegates, while Arkansas delayed action on negro voting rights. Illinois, Vermont, and Mississippi delegate selections followed partisan fights. St Peter's, Vatican City, is the world's largest church.
