Lincoln May 18 Officials of the Big Six conference unanimously voted to leave radio broadcast control of athletic contests to each institution. They liberalized expense rules and hours for eligibility, considering a two day conference swimming meet, with policy to be set by each school.
Oscar S. Stauffer of Arkansas City was re-elected state chairman of the Associated Press by Kansas members meeting in Topeka.(io M. Thompson of Kansas City was re-elected secretary) The group discussed news association issues and heard W. F. Brooks describe plans for a new wire photo service launching next fall.
The Southern Pacific Steamship company announced a voluntary wage increase for 450 Galveston and 200 Houston longshoremen. The new scale is 60 cents hourly for straight time and 80 cents for overtime, up from 50 and 75 cents in Galveston and 50 and 53 cents in Houston. Workers are non affiliated with the International Longshoremen's Association and run ten hours daily.
Generally fair weather tonight and Saturday with little temperature change. Morning skies clear. Dirt roads mostly good except fair to rough near Emporia. Douglas County roads listed as good. Temperature records note 1 p.m readings yesterday and today’s minimum and maximum values.
Washington May 18 AP Vincent Astor, host of President Roosevelt on the Nourmahal, refused to discuss the President’s fishing luck. Senate committee pressed for details, but Astor said he must remain noncommittal and cannot be un-sweared without removing his oath.
The Rev. Joseph F. King Jr of Plymouth Congregational will preach the graduation sermon for Lawrence high school seniors at 8 Sunday evening in the school auditorium. The commencement program, May 25 at 8:15, features Dr W L Burdick of the University of Kansas as speaker. The service includes hymns, Scripture, solos, and sermons by several local pastors.
Walter Hartley, notorious Ozarks bank robber who escaped Ozark county jail, was found hiding in a farm house near Dugginsville and shot dead by highway patrolmen after a firefight. Sheriff S. W. Daniel, abducted during the escape, was with officers at the scene and the coroner was summoned to Gainesville.
About 650 veterans and supporters marched past the White House in Washington's third bonus march in as many years. They carried roughly lettered banners demanding payment of the bonus and presented petitions to Vice President Garner and Speaker Rainey at the Capitol, urging repeal of the economy act and restoration of unemployment benefits.
In Newton North Carolina on May 18 two officers were seriously wounded after stopping a Chevrolet with Tennessee plates. A machine gun fired from a window as three suspects fled, sending the officers to Hickory Hospital. The same report notes Roosevelt open to insured bank deposits up to five thousand dollars.

Deputies from the U S marshal's office were ordered to seize 908 cases from the T J Pendergast liquor warehouse and 830 cases from the Midwest Distributing company warehouse in Kansas City. A libel petition alleges the whisky is adulterated misbranded and fails tests of the U S Pure Food and Drug Department. The whisky is alleged to have been shipped by Brown Forman Distillery Co of Louisville Kentucky. The seized liquor will be held while the companies may show why it should not be destroyed. A Pendergast distributor manager said the whisky was mislabelled and was to be returned after delivery before the court order.
Chicago Cubs defeated Philadelphia 9 to 5 as two Cubs players hit home runs including Klein’s 12th and Stainback’s bases loaded shot. The loss spoiled Jim Winford’s major league debut for Boston in a separate game against St. Louis. Pittsburgh toppled Brooklyn 3 to 1 with five-run opening rally. Cincinnati edged New York 2 to 1 in a Reds Giants matchup. Washington beat Cleveland 3 to 1 with Kuhel delivering a decisive homer. More than 250 manuscripts were entered in a New York church playwriting contest.

Leonardville authorities report the Farmers and Merchants State bank robbed at noon by two young men wearing dark clothes. They seized 3200 to 200 dollars, fled in a small coupe believed to be Ford V-8 or Plymouth, heading east. Undersheriff M J McKeeman and cashier C T Beninga described the robbers and persons in town who had not been seen before. Police issued alerts to nearby towns.
Leavenworth Kansas May 18 An unidentified youth about 22 was shot fatally early today by Mrs Cora Williams wife of John Williams on their farm four miles west of Jarbale The woman said she lay in wait for chicken thieves saw two men approach fired once with a revolver and one man fell shot through the back of the head The other fled A coroner s jury ruled the killing justifiable
Irish dramatist Bernard Shaw returned from a 23000 mile trip to New Zealand and warned reporters that a close alliance between Britain and Japan would push America toward Russia. He argued that Australia New Zealand and Canada would join the United States if invited.
The stock index for 90 stocks stood at 78.2 yesterday down from 79 as Ford debuts a V-8 Hamilton’s-Adv promotion. Investors watch auto ads influence shares amid market fluctuations.

New organ production resumes at Reuter Organ Co as seven instruments are underway including a residence organ for Dr. John R. Brinkley in Del Rio Texas. The large rye manual organ with 260 plus pipes costs about 12000 dollars and will be installed in June. It features carved walnut and wrought iron screens and is equipped with drums chimes and a vibro harp. Other commissions include organs for churches in McPherson Santa Fe Parsons Ft. Smith Chanute and Concord New Hampshire.
In Tucson on May 18 AP reported June Robles failed to identify a man named by authorities as the “most promising” suspect in the abduction and desert burial of a six year old girl. The man remained in technical custody at a private house while investigators pursued corroborating evidence.
Dallas report says patrolman L. J. Bell was shot with his own pistol when escapee Richard Charles Rehm grabbed the weapon from Bell as he approached with handcuffs. Rehm fled, commandeered a car, and was being sought as a fugitive from New York.
Clarence Payne, a 65 year old unemployed farm hand, rode through Elston on the main street firing a shotgun at two merchants, Karney Collett and John F. Leach, wounding them before killing himself. Witnesses say no warning was given and Collett was shot first as Leach tried to intervene. Authorities suspect temporary insanity.
AP reports Bishop William F. Mc Dowell says first definite terms for merging the Methodist church branches will be prepared likely this fall. About 1,000,000 members across groups would be affected by the merger.
Elwyn Dees of Kansas shattered the Big Six shot put record with a 50 feet 1 1/2 inch first throw during preliminaries at Memorial Stadium Lincoln Neb May 18. Nebraska’s Hugh Rhea held the former 49 feet 11 1/2 inch mark since 1932.
In St Paul a 13 year old boy testified in federal court against his mother and two co defendants Evelyn Frechette Dr Clayton May and Mrs Augusta Salt. The boy named Evelyn Frechette and John Dillinger among visitors to his mother's home amid questions on a leg wound treatment after the escape gunfire on March 31.
Kansas City police and federal officers report a cache of three pistols cartridges and ammunition found near the Kansas State penitentiary was possibly planted by a man who used the name Johnson and claimed Roanoke Virginia residence The pistols were bought from two pawnshops in Kansas City Kansas and authorities seek the man in connection with a possible prison escape plot
In New York a white man and a Black man fought at the edge of a 125th street Lenox avenue subway platform and fell under an advancing train. Both unidentified, they were crushed to death. one victim was Black.
Washington AP May 18 President Roosevelt and Democratic leaders addressed a half million dollar deficit facing the party. Postmaster General Farley national chairman James W. Gerard treasurer and Bernard M. Baruch discussed a program to erase the red figures. Roosevelt stressed no contributions from large corporate interests and urged small donor support.
Dedication services for the R. C. Manley memorial rock garden in Central Park are set for Monday afternoon May 21 at 4 o'clock under the Lawrence Flower club. A bronze marker will be placed on a garden stone and dedicated to the late Mr. Manley, who planned the garden with the flower club and led fundraising from friends and member organizations. Contributions included money time labor materials and many plants with a record book to be shown to Mrs. Manley. Scout groups Rotary Elks Masons and Mayor Spalding will speak as Warwick Benedict is credited with supervising construction and time involved the garden completed last fall and awaiting more plantings.

Topeka May 18 AP The name of Dr James M Scott of Lebanon appears eliminated from consideration for the next chairman of the Republican state committee. Scott would be ineligible under state law because the Smith county central committee did not name him county chairman, a requirement that the state chairman be a member of the state central committee. Other candidates included Will Beck Fred Brinkerhoff Lester McCoy Oscar Stauffer and Giles Atherton. Gov Alf M Landon reportedly favored Scott, but Frank Carlson, the present chairman, plans to resign at a May 22 meeting.
Kan sas City Federal Reserve district reports deposits at $135 575 000 for the past week with total clearings at $163 500 000 an increase of 5 000 000 over the prior week and 40 000 000 more than a year ago. Also notes a high level of activity in member deposits and interbank settlements.
Board of education members resignations this week prompt a reorganization effort to handle the New York school project. George J. Kirchhoff Sr and Frank B. Strong quit after voting against reinstating principal M F Hyde at the junior high. John E. Jacobs has been chosen to replace Hyde. Patrons discuss recalls while four board members seek reconsideration of resignations.
A L Wood of Wichita, vice president and trust officer of the First National Bank, was elected president of the Kansas division of the American Bankers Association at the 47th annual Kansas Bankers Association convention in Wichita. W D Ferguson and L W Willis were elected vice presidents, with W Max Harris named secretary treasurer and other officials chosen for bank and trust groups. The Macon reaches home port in Sunnyvale completing a transcontinental voyage from Miami as part of naval maneuvers.
