Sofia reports reveal the army overthrew Bulgaria's government and dissolved parliament. King Boris approved a new dictatorial cabinet led by Kimond Guerguieff amid widespread troop deployments and civic calm. Rumors say Boris signed 30 decrees. Yugoslav mobilization rumors followed.
Chicago May 19 AP rumor says Clarence Darrow might return from retirement to defend Samuel Insull. The 77 year old lawyer would face charges of mail fraud bankruptcy evasion and embezzlement, withInsull's son noting they are considering Darrow. Darrow would be back in court since the Massie trial in Honolulu and he chairs the national recovery review board.
Geneva reports Colombia and Peru have reached a complete agreement on their border dispute. Brazil's Foreign Minister Mello Franco mediated, sending felicitation to the League of Nations and to Secretary General Avenol. Jurists study an embargo formula on war materials for Paraguay and Bolivia to align with the council.
Topeka reports Gov Alf Landon urged federal emergency relief chief Harry Hopkins to approve extra funds for western Kansas drought stricken counties and immediate 30000 to cover emergencies from coal mine closures in Crawford and Cherokee counties. Kansas had received 740000 federal relief plus 100000 for drought areas for May. April grant was 770000. Landon telegraphed that drought conditions worsen with a June 1 need for more aid.
Kansas forecast calls for generally fair weather tonight and Sunday with cooler temperatures in the northwest. Morning conditions show clear skies and dry Douglas County roads. Gas Office Record lists temperatures with yesterday evening and today morning readings. Also a local classified ad prompt seeks vacant property renters.
The Lawrence Kansas Board of Education released a statement denying dissension, affirming harmony among members, and explaining resignations as non punitive. It notes George J. Kirchhoff Jr withdrew his resignation, endorses strong service, and says no one was dismissed while renewals reflect best interests. The pledge expresses confidence in employees and calls for community support.
Harvard criminology professor Dr Sheldon Glueck told the National Probation Association conference that delaying action on juvenile delinquency hampers results and called for eugenic sterilization of extremely unfit parents and professional contraception guidance. Judge Harry L Eastman said prevention lies with state and community, citing need for treatment facilities, school cooperation, social services, recreation and character building. Glenn Cunningham of Kansas won the 1934 Big Six mile in 4 28.53 at Memorial Stadium Lincoln. Kansas and Nebraska tied at 29 points each after seven events with Oklahoma 21, followed by Kansas State 20 and Missouri 12. Other event winners included Knappenberger and Lam bertus in hurdles and sprints, with scattered placements and weather affecting marks.
Walter Dipley who killed Stanley Ketchel and spent over 23 years in Missouri state prison was pardoned today by Governor Park in Jefferson City. Dipley’s release ends a lengthy case tied to Ketchel’s famous boxing career and unsettled public reaction.
Boston edged 2-1 as Carleton and Branit held the Braves to three hits at St Teuke. Giants beat Reds 6-5 at the Polo Grounds in a tight finish. He warns economic and individual liberty may be destroyed by the revolutionary process and urges Republicans to defend Union principles. In Minneapolis on May 19 AP reports 20 injured as armed convoys clashed with strikers blocking trucks. Police fought with rocks and clubs near fruit company offices and Thomas store garages, allowing some supplies to move. A tentative settlement was reached with Governor Olson after talks, while 5,000 drivers seek union recognition and a closed shop.
Portland May 19 AP reports Democratic Congressman Charles H. Martin who retired to seek the Oregon governorship and Republican state Senator Joe E. Dunne will be the party standard bearers in the gubernatorial contest six months hence.
Vienna May 19 AP reports terrorist explosions in the night signal high intensity in Austrian politics. In Salzburg the blasts were most numerous with many injured. Several families began leaving the city in panic.
In Manhattan Kansas on May 19 the Fourth Davick Young Republicans adopted resolutions endorsing Governor Alf M. Landen and continuing his administration's policies. A second resolution pledged allegiance to the federal constitution and strict freedom of the press.
With good weather Massachusetts street paving should finish in five days though the street stays closed for 100 more days to meet state highway rules. Workers, on 6 am to 7 pm shifts, labor through the re employment program while finishers stay later. Concrete pours continue in the 1509 block as intersections at Sixteenth and Fifteenth streets are completed and opened. Intersections at Twentieth and Nineteenth streets have opened, with Eleventh and Map rachusetts nearly ready. South of Eleventh, 5 feet of paving awaits the 10 day aging period before opening. The crew started at Sixteenth street pouring the west-side strip toward Fifteenth before noon.
Arthur Voss of Kansas and Albert Upsher of Oklahoma advanced to the Big Six singles final after semi-final wins in Lincoln Nebraska May 19. Voss defeated Rollins 6-3 6-4 while Upsher beat Haegen 6-0 5-4. Doubles finals will pair Upsher-Rollins against Kell-Voss. The semi-final results leave Oklahoma 4 points Kansas 3 Nebraska 3 Iowa State 2 Kansas State 1 Missouri 0.
The New York school began pouring concrete footings and excavation for the boiler room nears completion. Heavy rain slowed digging, but general contractors Lundgren and Carlson push to regain time on the one story building expected to be ready next fall. Reemployment office supplies the excavation workers.
Judge Charles J. Dawson of the federal district court issued a written opinion calling the National Recovery Act as applied to local affairs the boldest kind of usurpation. He had earlier granted a temporary injunction shielding 34 western Kentucky coal operators from NRA prosecutions and ordered miners paid $4 for a seven hour day, instead of the $4.60 code rate, with the district attorney barred from enforcing code penalties.
In Birmingham on May 19 an explosive hurled from a fast, dark car shattered yards and windows at Ishkooda and Wenonah mining camps of the Tennessee Coal Iron and Railroad Co. It failed to hit any target among three nonunion miners. Separately in Painesville three workers died and three injured when a bronze powder plant blast and fire occurred. Secretary Perkins described housing bill as key to recovery in Washington.

Col. M. G. Randol, commander of the University of Missouri ROTC, warned the War Department may withdraw the entire ROTC unit if the board of curators accepts a faculty proposal to remove compulsory military training. Randol attributed the anti military training push to communist propagandists unaffiliated with the university.
Clyde Teter longtime Ober's clothing store salesman died at his Winona Avenue home after a seven week illness. He was active in Elks lodge and student athletic affairs, survived by wife, son Francis, a brother and a sister. Funeral Monday at First Presbyterian Church in Lawrence with Elks in attendance.
County officers plus two state representatives face a June 20 noon filing deadline with many candidates still to file. Sheriff race attracts several contenders as incumbents expect re election, though Dunkley cannot run again. Also notes student aid continuation petition at Kansas State and upcoming governors conference at Mackinac Island July 26 to 28.
Leavenworth County deputy sheriff Turner traced a stolen truck carrying 34 tires and 41 inner tubes to Kansas City, Missouri, after a theft at the J. G. White garage in Tonganoxie. Delmar DeLude later reported five tires missing amid the recovery and reward negotiations ending with a $10 payment.
