Lawrence school board sees George J. Kirchhoff Jr. resign after Frank B. Strong, both amid renewed pressure over the Hyde principal case. Ewing and others will decide if resignations change the board's stance on reelecting Hyde for 1933-34.
James Monroe Troutt a Virginia Military Institute senior was flown by army transport to Johns Hopkins Baltimore after a car crash. Dr Walter E Dandy performed emergency brain surgery to relieve concussion pressure and remove a blood clot. Officials called the operation apparently successful and Troutt had a pretty good recovery chance.
The California supreme court will decide David A. Lamson's fate for the murder of his wife Allene Thorpe Lamson. Both sides finished arguments and the defense has 30 days to file its brief. The court has 90 days to rule, with possible reversal, upholding, or commuting the death sentence.
The Kansas forecast calls for generally fair conditions tonight and Friday with slight warmth in the east and south, cooler in the northwest on Friday. Morning skies clear, with dirt roads good overall except fair near Topeka and Wichita. Douglas County roads are in fair condition. Temperatures show a 79 degree high yesterday and a low today.
Columbia Missouri May 17 AP Dr Walter Williams university president appointed three faculty members to a new five man intercollegiate athletics committee They are Lee Carl Overstreet professor of law Dudley S Conley dean of the school of medicine and Frank F Stephens dean of underclassmen Conley is the only former member of the old 12 man committee carried over The advisory alumni committee will elect two alumni members to the group which takes effect June 1 and concentrates control of athletics in a few hands.
Geneva May 17 AP Great Britain called on the world to stop the war between Paraguay and Bolivia in the Chaco region. Captain Anthony Eden urged the League of Nations to cable seventeen nations to cease arms shipments. France Italy Spain Argentina Australia and Czechoslovakia pledged support. US officials awaited Washington guidance as the council postponed action to a later session.
Three kidnappers of Beverly Hills oilman William F. Gettle arrive at San Quentin from Los Angeles to begin life sentences. Guards accompany them as Kerrigan Williams and Kirk pose for photographers before processing. They are shaved, fingerprinted, and fitted in prison clothing then placed in the new-entrants ward for a few days before assignment.
The University of Kansas reserve units received the highest rating of excellent from the United States Army inspectors. A letter to the Chancellor's office from Col. R. H. McMeaster, commandant at Seventh Corps Area, notes the R C T C units were praised for training and administration. The President will be advised by formal letter in a few days.

Chancellor E H Lindley of the University of Kansas returned from Delaware and Washington after speaking at the University of Delaware centennial. He discussed federal aid for college students and praised the College Students Emergency Project. John C Tolson of Baltimore, Standard Life director, died suddenly at 56 from a heart attack, funeral set for Baltimore with national officers attending.
Hugoton Kansas mayor N J Madden and six council members face ouster petitions filed by Attorney General Roland Boynton after a deadlock over city appointments and pay warrants. Supreme Court scheduled a June 4 hearing to suspend the officials pending ouster proceedings.
Paris born actor Michael Farmer says he will contest Gloria Swanson's divorce action only if custody of their daughter is sought. He notes divorces aren’t recognized in the Irish Free State and suggests the matter may be a publicity stunt. He plans to wait for Swanson’s word and expects no immediate action.
Francis Brooke Hilligoss forty an electrician on the new courthouse died today in Kansas City from heart disease. He is survived by his widow Katherine Hilligoss his mother Mrs. Fred Reynolds and two brothers W W Hilligoss and T A Hilligoss. Funeral services will be held Friday in Atchison Kansas. Ted Hilligoss employed at Eldridge Pharmacy was called to Kansas City by his brother s death.
The 1935 encampment of the Kansas G A R and allied groups decided to hold the event in Kansas City Kansas next year. W W Nixon of Jewell was elected commander with W B Rhodes of Manhattan as second. Other officers include A O Gere of Stafford senior vice commander William Hammond of Emporia junior vice commander and James L King Salina chaplain. Mrs Flora M Stewart of El Dorado was chosen president of the Women's Relief Corps.
A second explosion at the Paturages au Fiel mine in Brussels today killed four teen miners. The firedamp blast comes after Tuesday night’s collapse that trapped 48 workers. rescuers with 20 men brought six seriously injured to the surface. Forty bodies were recovered from Tuesday’s blast.
A Douglas County Republican Club announces a meeting on May 23 at 8 o clock at the Chamber of Commerce. All Republicans are invited and women are urged to attend. Officers will be elected and organizational details finalized.

Chicago May 17 AP The Herald and Examiner said Henry Ford secretly visited Samuel Insull in his hospital room after inspecting Century of Progress grounds. Ford spent about 15 minutes chatting before boarding his train. An unnamed Chicagoan, who joined Ford, said the visit was spur of the moment.
Thirty two entrants sign up as civic clubs and Lawrence Flower club sponsor a yard and garden contest. Judges plan inspections in July and September with prizes awarded in October. Entries include locals like W J Baumgartner and Rae Warner, with two value classes and scoring by front yard rear grounds and alley.
Denver May 17 AP A Kansas advisory board urged upgrading U S highway 36 to first class tourist roadway. Harry Darby said Kansas would fund improvements if Colorado federalized the route and followed with similar work. Governor Johnson and C D Vail pledged to consult Colorado board in about two weeks and relay its reaction.
Goffe & Carkener Co. of Kansas City Missouri has opened a branch office in Lawrence in the basement of the Hotel Eldridge. The firm will trade in grains cotton stocks and bonds and handle brokerage business locally.
Frank Frisch belted his first homer of the season with a man on in the eighth to lift the St. Louis Cardinals to a 6 3 victory over the Boston Braves in Boston. Dean, Davis, Betts, Smith and Morgan also contributed as the Braves fell behind early.
The Chamber of Commerce announces a spring outing at Lawrence Country Club replacing the annual meeting. A 1:30 golf start and buffet dinner at 6:10 will cap a day of fellowship with no outside speaker. Glenn Charlton chairs. co sponsors cancel next week’s meetings to attend.
Topeka May 17 AP Hugoton faces ouster in state supreme court over 11 month deadlock. Attorney General Boynton filed petition to remove Mayor N J Madden and councilmen S T Township Tyan O Moore John A O Dell C F Shafer and C B Combs. Charges include failure to appoint and approve a city marshal and water plant superintendent and noncompliance with cash basis law and required ordinances. Township Moore and O Dell Shafer Combs offered to resign. Township Moore refused without specific charges. A E Kramer Stevens County attorney assisting.
Two Oklahoma men faced lengthy sentences after convictions in Kansas bank robberies. Frank Peterson received 20 to 50 years for a Weir bank robbery last August. Charles Conner was sentenced to 20 to 100 years for the Galena National Bank robbery last October.
Stock market page reports the average of 90 stocks at 72.2, up from yesterday’s 75.9. New Ford V-8 features in Hamilton's advertisement as a notable auto industry note.
In Topeka on May 17 federal district judge Ricard Je Hopkins denied the New trial bid by 10 Goodland high school girls in a suit where Miss Georgia Hill of Silvis Illinois received 2500 dollars. The plaintiff says the spanking occurred after she attended a basketball game with a boy and the girls took her to the country. Hill was a Goodland high school student at the time.
The Chamber of Commerce board accepted W H Pendleton's resignation as first vice president and appointed C E Birch, city schools superintendent, to fill the vacancy. Dr H L Chambers chairs the taxation committee which will review county assessor work and take up discrepancies with the county commissioners. Complaints must be in writing to George Hetrick. The board also voted honorary membership to the Business and Professional Women's Club for raising nearly $100 toward furnishing the ladies rest room at the Chamber building. The rest room committee was authorized to proceed.
Captain George Pond and Lieutenant Cesare Sabelli set out from Portmarnock near Dublin for the return Atlantic crossing to New York. They express confidence the same power that aided the eastward voyage will help them back. They plan to fly to Rome briefly Saturday before returning to Dublin for a full overhaul, awaiting airfield repairs.
Relatives of Carl Wesley Perry and his fiancé Glenda Florine Crain clash over the funeral arrangements. Perry died in a Oklahoma City hospital after obtaining a license to marry Crain, who was unable to wed as he was unconscious. The Gardners claim they will move the body to Leavenworth and manage the estate, noting Crain was named beneficiary of a $10,000 policy years earlier.
Edmonton report states James Fahey, who escaped Leavenworth 24 years ago, left district court a free man. Judge J L Crawford said the U S decision not to return him to the life sentence for robbery was proper, noting Fahey has paid a heavy mental price for any crime.
The board of education elected John Jacobs of Galawatomie as principal of the Junior High for the 1914-15 school year after patrons urged reappointment of M F P Hyde. Hyde’s retention was discussed at five meetings with teachers and parents voicing support for Hyde and criticizing the board’s process.
