St Petersburg dispatch reports the draft address to the throne lists ten demands from the lower house including general amnesty abolition of the death penalty suspension of martial law civil liberty reform of the fundamental law ministerial responsibility and rights of trade unions with interpellation and land expropriation. Also notes routine notices about a funeral train arrival for Mrs George W Smith in Lola.
The Douglas county institute will meet at the Baptist church at 9 am Wednesday. All are invited. Signed CA Porter secretary.
Julia Dunigan born in Jefferson county September 16 1890 died in Dallas county May 10 1908 after a hogering illness. Lived mostly near Lawrence except for years in Colorado. She devoted herself to home duties and helping others, known for a willing spirit and sweet lovable life. Her loss leaves a lasting good influence on those who knew her.
Sanford W Hayden born April in Missouri died May 10 1000 in Lawrence Kansas. He moved with his mother Sarah Tayden to town as a boy and worked for Grmor Wilder and i'alm Griffity and Whitcomb. He lived in Law pete many years then Kansas City reached permanent residence. Survived by mother Bert Hayden brother Willam Hayden sister Alge Myers nephew George W Walker of Williams and Walker Co. Funeral held at Warren Street Baptist Church on May 12.
Lawrence hosts a high school declamation contest with cash prizes for first, second, and third place. The event, to be held Thursday at the high school building, charges 30 cents admission to support expenses and future annual shows. Participants include Walter Eastman Rebecca Passo Irena Garrett Florence Payne Thomas Steepsr Gretchen Rankin Rollin Perkins Frederica Hodder Hannah Mitchell and Louis Wenhelmi.

Shenandoah May 15 A gas explosion at Shenandoah City colliery of the Philadelphia and Reading Coal Company traps an estimated 30 to 40 men on the first lift as black damp blocks rescue efforts. Two men are known dead, Rosa Sam Powell badly burned and likely to die.
A brief sales item promotes electric fans irons motors and porch lights as low cost improvements to cool homes and ease daily burdens. It claims fans keep bedrooms cool during sultry days and that sewing machine motors save labor, urging households to adopt these ready to use electric devices for better living.
In St Petersburg on May 15 an inquest identified the body found in a villa at Ozarki Finland as Father Capon. The deceased’s lawyer confirmed the positive identification, framing the investigation’s next steps.

Rochester May 15 The jury suspends Rev Dr Algernon Crapsey from church duties until he shows conformity to the Apostles Creed and Nicene Creed as required by ecclesiastical authorities. The verdict directs suspension during this period while the diocese assesses his beliefs. Stop at Ewings for ice cream on the way home.
Local society column reports Dr W W Beno stopping in Lawrence en route to Fort Riley after passing an exam to become captain. Several visits and gatherings are noted including luncheons, thimble parties, a samba trip to Topeka, a state church meeting, dances, and various travelers. Also mentions a minor fire on South Massachusetts Street and several town visits by residents.
Washington May 15 The president forwarded Secretary Taft's letter endorsing buying supplies for the Panama canal at the cheapest market whether American or foreign. Taft cites bids for two $38 dredges with Maryland Steel at 774,450 and Simons and Co of Renfrew Scotland offering 654,000 delivered at the Clyde, urging Congress to define policy.
Denver voters go to the polls to elect an alderman three city supervisors and three members of the elections committee amid charter amendments and a city utility and lighting plant purchase question. The edition also notes horticultural society plans and Sunday school convention thanks.
A two piano recital will be held tomorrow afternoon at 4 oclock at North College by Prot Preyer and Fraf Skilton with Mrs Lyons and Miss Phipps. The program includes variations on a theme of Beethoven, music from Byloa Delibea, the Prelude by Liszt, and a new violin and piano work by Prof Skilton. Admission 25 cents.
A jury awarded the city in the 1902 suit by Mrs Mary Rainey for injuries from a February 25 fall at 711 Massachusetts Street. Her appeal over legal technicalities led to a Supreme Court reversal and a new trial, culminating in a verdict for the city amid doubt after key witnesses died. The city’s attorneys were George Davis, Bishop, and Mitchall. Rainey’s were Judge Henson, Bird, and Page. The decision ends a long legal battle with no anticipated further appeals.
An examination for certificates to teach in city schools will be held on Saturday May 19 and Saturday May 26. May 19 subjects include Reading penmanship political and physical geography history of Kansas and the United States physiology didactics bookkeeping rhetoric and constitution. Mrs John Kilworth presided as president of the city federation of women's clubs. At 2 o'clock today at the Presbyterian church the committee and executive council reviewed committee reports. The spring dollar assessments will cover the convention expenses with a surplus for the federation treasury. The reception was the largest expense. thanks were given to Dr Strong of the university and other supporters for aiding the eleventh annual state federation meeting.
The 17th anniversary of the Epworth League of the Methods church was observed with an 8 PM arrival, reception, and a banquet. Cr Ward of Kansas City presided as toastmaster, speakers included Dr Lenig and Mr WGA Quackenbush, with toasts on Our Chata, The Leagues Birthday, The Past, The Future and an Epworth League’s Pledge.
Friends of Miss May G Gardner regret to hear she is very ill in New York City at a hospital. She had an ear operation this winter that was not fully successful, followed by scarlet fever. Willber Gardner left for New York today.
The Batty Weshiptgon chapter will hold a regular meeting in their rooms at the court house Thursday afternoon at 2 30. May 17. Miss Byrd Miss Welsh and Moore are noted in the notice with Geo Leonard as Secretary.
In district court this morning Judge Smart refused to hear a motion from Wae of Topeka in the incubator baby case. The judge had stated only a mandate from the supreme court could reopen the case. No mandate has been received yet. Shorthand classes advertised at Lawrence Business College. Also a notice of The Ruins of San Francisco illustrated photos now available at Smith’s News Depot.
A trade offer seeks 400 acres of well-improved farm land in eastern Kansen at 40 dollars per acre in exchange for lumber or hardware stock. The proposer, J. M. Neville of 700 Massachusetts Street, home phone 609, prefers stock not to exceed 12,000 or 14,000.
