Long Beach officials launch the Queen Mary as a tourist draw after a four year, multi million dollar conversion. About 10 000 to 15 000 visitors were expected to tour a recreated voyage with museums snack stands and shops while enduring a contentious financing path.

Father and Son Hurt in Lakeview Road Cycle Crash

David G. Higgins, 32, of Rt 1 Lawrence, and his six year old son, were hospitalized with possible fractures after a car struck their motorcycle about a half mile west of the Iowa turnoff on Lakeview Road. The incident occurred shortly after 11 a.m. with both vehicles reported eastbound. Higgins worked in the Journal-World engraving department. They were taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. status listed as good before noon pending examination.

Lawrence Jayhawk Kennel Club Dog Show Looms

Entries continue for the Lawrence Jayhawk Kennel Club annual show at the 4 H Fair grounds. Dogs from over 40 states are expected for the nationally sanctioned event. Show hours 8 a m to 8 p m with eliminations in the afternoon. spectators urged to come early to see the greatest variety and strongest animals.

Lawrence police Lt. Jack Evans and the Lawrence Breakfast Optimist Club presented one bicycle to a needy family Friday with another planned later this month. Donations funded the two gifts as part of an annual club project.

Kansas University Junior Pleads Guilty in Drug Raid Case

Raymond Neal Hoffman a Kansas University junior from Dix Hills New York pleaded guilty to one count of illegal possession of marijuana a misdemeanor He received a one year suspended sentence and a 1000 fine with 750 abated He was arrested in the February 26 Lawrence raid conducted by Atty Gen Vern Miller and had been free on bond.

Kansas State to grant a record near 3000 degrees

Kansas State University will confer a record nearly 3,000 degrees this year. The current total includes 1,201 degrees already awarded since the May 1970 commencement and 1,701 candidates for degrees this spring, surpassing the previous high of 2,846 in 1969-70.

Truman Turns 87 as Missouri Marks 150th State Anniversary

Former President Harry S. Truman celebrated his 87th birthday in Independence Missouri with national and regional leaders gathering at the Truman Library for ceremonies marking Missouri's 150th anniversary. A commemorative stamp featuring the Thomas Hart Benton mural Independence and the Opening of the West was issued at the event. Independence post office reported brisk stamp sales.

Rogers says both nations desire peace in Rome trip

Secretary of State William P. Rogers reported an immensely strong desire for peace after talks with Israelis and Arabs during a Middle East mission. He planned to send Joseph Sisco to Cairo to report on Israel's terms for reopening the Suez Canal and noted progress but lingering differences. Rogers also met Pope Paul VI and Italian leaders in Rome before returning to Washington.

KU to Name Acting Director for Museum of Art

Kansas University may fill the vacancy at the KU Museum of Art with an acting director after Bret Waller’s resignation. Francis Heller said arrangements could be complete by mid week. A separate vacancy for the KU law school dean may wait until after commencement.
