The Orlando Diocese adopts a Youthful Marriage Policy to curb teen divorce, requiring couples under 19 to undergo three months of waiting and in depth interviews. The plan includes financial status review, counseling, and written approval from the diocese marriage court before a ceremony.
AFL CIO President George Meany says unemployment could rise to about 11.5 percent before the recession ends, revising his midyear forecast upward from earlier estimates. President Ford remains optimistic that the economy is moving out of the downturn next year.
The 1975 Kansas Legislature officially ends after brief adjournment with nine lawmakers present in both houses. Gov Bennett’s veto messages delayed final adjournment while 1,246 bills were introduced, 509 passed, six vetoed, 238 killed, and 490 carried over to 1976.
Gov. Bennett vetoed a Senate bill funding the Kansas State Penitentiary farm, forcing its closure. The 400 acre Lansing farm will be sold or leased, with corrections secretary to dispose of land. Critics cited rising costs and inmate disinterest as reasons for ending the operation.
Hazel Goss, 78, of Topeka, received the Distinguished Older Citizen of the Year award from Gov. Robert Bennett at a Kansas Union banquet. The event, tied to the Kansas Conference on Aging, highlighted Goss's decades of service to social welfare and MS support programs. The same day, Kansas job data showed unemployment down to 4.0 percent in mid April led by falls in construction and manufacturing sectors.
City officials urge residents to follow trash rules under the Lawrence Sanitation Workers Union agreement. Max container size is 30 gallons with no stated weight limit. yard trimmings must be in four foot bundles not exceeding 75 pounds. Trucks to get flashing lights. a second mechanic was reassigned to improve service.
The Lawrence Education Assn will hold its annual recognition dinner at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Lawrence High School cafeteria. New LEA officers will be named and seven retiring employees with 25 years of service will be honored. Deborah S. Holmes will receive the Vicki Larason Landman Award for creative teaching and an LEA scholarship will be awarded. The LHS chorale will perform directed by Lewis Tilford. more than 200 attendees are expected.
Washington AP The House prepared to vote on a compromise strip mining bill after Senate passage. The measure would ban mining where land cannot be restored and impose a coal tax to fund cleanup, with states allowed their own enforcement. President Ford's veto potential remains uncertain.
Dr. William Rieke, executive vice chancellor, said KUMC may relax the hiring freeze in selected areas noting cost savings and staff strain. He expects some nursing positions to be filled after the fiscal year end while cautioning that next year's funding needs must come from the legislature to avoid renewed limits.
