Violence Flare Across Nation as Antiwar Protests Grow

About 1 000 protesters staged a sit down in Boston outside a federal building after tens of thousands demonstrated nationwide on Wednesday. Violent clashes erupted in several cities including College Park Maryland and San Francisco with hundreds jailed and some injuries reported.

One Dead Many Hurt As Tornado Rips Joplin

A tornado struck Joplin Missouri at dusk injuring at least 50 and killing one. Police reported damage across 37 blocks downtown with power lines down, trailers and houses demolished, and trees and debris blocking streets. National Guardsmen were deployed to curb looting as emergency crews aided residents.

FBI raids sweep Michigan in largest gambling roundup

Washington reports more than 400 FBI agents and local officers joined a Michigan-wide operation arresting 151 suspects on federal gambling charges. Fifteen indictments were returned from Detroit and Grand Rapids grand juries, with arrests or searches in Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Flint, Saginaw, Battle Creek, and Kalamazoo.

Ballard Center appoints officers as youth program planned

Ballard Center board, meeting Tuesday night, sets summer youth program focusing on jobs and recreation plus tutoring to boost reading. Volunteers sought for the program. Next board meeting at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday to discuss further. Officers elected include J Oliver Harris president and Jon Blubaugh vice president.

Police Report Three Thefts In Lawrence Area

Lawrence police report three thefts including a motorcycle owned by Mark Lyman valued at 687 dollars taken from a lot behind his house between 4 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Wednesday. Allan D. Schimmels reported 695 dollars of items stolen from his unlocked apartment between 4:30 p.m. Wednesday and 1 a.m. today. Charlie Haas reported a 150 dollar chain saw stolen from his garage between April 25 and Tuesday.

KU History Chair Dr George Anderson Dies After Stroke

Dr George L Anderson a KU history professor and longtime department chair died at 66 after a stroke. Funeral at Trinity Lutheran Church followed by burial at Memorial Park. memorials to Lutheran Laymen's Movement or KU Endowment Fund. Survivors include widow Caroline daughter-in-law and several relatives.

Fire Damages Home in Lawrence with Possible Arson

A fire at 1230 Tennessee in Lawrence caused about 3300 dollars damage to A F Bramble’s two story home. Fire Chief F C Sanders noted no evidence of cause found though Mrs Bramble suspects arson. Occupants include KU students Michael Taylor Johnny Ko Albert King and Dale Wagner. The incident prompted multiple fire units and traffic disruptions.

Miller Seeks High Court Ruling on Conflict of Interest Law

Kansas Attorney General Vern Miller said he will seek a ruling from the state’s Supreme Court on the constitutionality of the conflict of interest law. He plans to join as a defendant with Shawnee County’s county attorney in a declaratory judgment suit brought by Thomas Griffith of Manhattan, a Kansas Board of Regents member. Griffith faced charges in Shawnee County Magistrate Court for failing to list substantial financial interests, charges later dismissed as portions of the law unconstitutional.

The Lawrence High School Concert Band and Concert Choir canceled tonight due to lack of performance space after a school play rehearsal in the auditorium and a Lawrence Education Assn dinner in the cafeteria. Previously the group performed at Burlingame High School, Burlington High School, and Yates Center High School.

K State Alumni Elect President in Balloting

Dr. Raymond J. Doll of Roe land Park Kansas has been elected president of the Kansas State University alumni association. He is vice president and senior economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. Doll won the election in ballot by more than 50 000 alumni and will serve two years. Five new directors were elected for three year terms and include Bill Binford Liberal Marilyn Dillinger Brewster Robert H Featherston Tulsa Okla Robert H Haymaker Larned and Robert L Rousey Manhattan.
