A two ton truck turned on its left side at 5 20 p m Tuesday due to steering failure. Kenneth A Falk 29 Rossville drove for Kansas Power and Light Co Topeka. The accident occurred two tenths of a mile south of U S 56 on Globe Road seven miles west of Baldwin Junction. Damage totaled 800 to the truck and 20 to a fence owned by Arlie Heffner Overbrook Route 1. Falk uninjured.
Rep. Durward Hall of Missouri says he will re introduce his amendment to the Uniform Time Act of 1966. The proposal would restrict Daylight Saving Time to three months from the first Sunday after Memorial Day to the first Sunday after Labor Day.
Col Ben Eddy named to head the Air Force ROTC program at Kansas University starting next fall. Eddy, from Topeka, comes after leading reconnaissance and electronic warfare in Europe. He will lead KU’s EU unit with 26 years of service.
Dr. E Raymond Hall of Kansas University outlined a 3000 acre Tallgrass Prairie National Park as the lone virgin tallgrass prairie in the U S on the Kansas Flint Hills eastern slope. He urged opposing the Hillsdale Reservoir project and supported flood control by deep headwater impoundments. The meeting also backed opposition to a Lyons Kansas nuclear waste repository.
Lawrence High invalidated its primary Student Council election after conflicting voting instructions caused confusion. Ballots showed one candidate per office, though some voters followed two. Admins rescheduled the primary for Thursday morning and general voting for Friday.
Federal officers chased and boarded the Mercy Wiggins to find five tons of marijuana in 333 bags on a 60 foot shrimp boat off the Golden Gate. The seizure, the largest in U S history, valued at about 1.4 million dollars, led to multiple arrests across three connected sites including a companion yacht and a camper, with bail set at 50 to 100 thousand dollars.

U S Steel Corp plans an average 6 percent price increase starting in June on selected products. Hot rolled sheet and slip will rise $9 per ton on June 16, hot rolled bands $8.50 on June 16, cold rolled sheets $12 on July 1, galvanized and aluminum coated sheets and long products $13 on June 16.
Gary Indiana mayor Richard G. Hatcher won a landslide renomination for a second term in a Democratic primary. With 146 of 147 precincts reporting Hatcher led Dr. Alexander S. Williams 33 270 to 19 405 amid charges of crime and gang activity during the campaign.
Kansas City AP reports a 21-year-old mother faces child abandonment charges after leaving her two children, 6 months and 1% years old, alone for two days in a locked apartment. The boy was dehydrated and hungry and treated at Children’s Mercy Hospital. the girl was taken to Jackson County Children’s Shelter. Bond set at $250. court appearance May 10. The mother said she had to leave and gave a friend $10 to care for the children. Police found the boy among trash and broken dishes and the girl on a bed.

Rowe of Colorado Springs sues Emporia High School principal Calvin Chandler the College of Emporia and seven faculty members for 1 million dollars The suit filed in U S District Court Kansas City later moved to Wichita cites equal protection due process libel and defamation over Rowe former student teacher termination Atherton represents the board as Chandler's counsel denying the allegations as baseless.

Dr Howard T Hill Sr longtime head of the Kansas State University speech department died at age 81 in his Manhattan apartment Tuesday evening He led the department for 32 years until retirement in 1954 and is survived by son Howard T Hill Jr of Springfield Illinois He previously taught at the University of Kansas and later served as visiting professor at Missouri Columbia Park College Parkville Missouri and the University of Richmond Virginia
