Robert Bolivar DePugh founder and leader of the Minutemen organization has been moved from Leavenworth to the Atlanta federal prison. He is serving four years for bond jumping and nine ten year terms for violations of the federal gun control act. DePugh was a fugitive for about 17 months before capture in July 1969 near Truth or Consequences New Mexico.
Wichita physician Dr. M. Robert Knapp says Kansas must revise malpractice laws to attract doctors, especially in rural areas. The Kansas Medical Society supports a 1971 bill with a four year discovery limit plus one year to file, allowing installments on judgments over 50 000 and basing awards on actual costs time loss and pain and suffering.
William G. Roley Jr. 17, of Manitou Springs Colorado, found guilty of aiding and abetting marijuana smuggling into the United States. He helped move 140 pounds from Afghanistan and faces sentencing after remaining free on a $10,000 bond. Michael Ken Culkin 26 pleaded innocent to a conspiracy tied to the same marijuana case.
Three men arrested during the February 26 drug raids in Lawrence were bound over to the June Court Day of the Douglas County District Court. Kimberly S Webster 23 of 1809 Ohio, Robert L Shepherd 19 and Mark L Shepherd 20 of 818 N Y were released on bonds 2000 for Webster 1500 for each Shepherd. The Shepherds face one felony count each for illegal sale and possession of marijuana while Webster faces two felony counts. Atty Gen Vern Miller testified in the Douglas County Court.
Washington AP reports federal courts in the capital ran long with bond hearings for about 7,000 antiwar protesters arrested for disrupting traffic. Judges set high bonds, defended the process as aimed at conviction, while some argued bail was excessive. Families, youths, and professionals were detained in a sprawling holding area near RFK Stadium as late-night sessions continued.
About 15 students and parents attended a Unified School District 341 meeting to learn details of joining a vocational-technical school. The board will not decide until more information is available while reviewing principal evaluations and staff changes.
