The public fixture on campus protests shifts from sympathy to demand for action. Officials in Washington and governors press colleges to curb violence, with threats of arrests and sanctions. The piece argues administrators must supervise campuses actively and not appease demonstrators.
Lawrence police report four assaults Friday night across South Park and downtown. Victims include Daniel Dana and Carol Meyer walk ing in the park, Harold Schreiber Jr and Michael Carnes assaulted near the fire truck, and Edward Hiyi who had his billfold stolen in an alley. An arrest was made for carrying a concealed weapon.
A crowd over last year’s 5000 attendance is predicted for the eighth annual Art in the Park Festival from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday in South Park. Sponsored by the Lawrence Art Guild and Park and Recreation Department, the event features art in all media for sale and added demonstrations and musical groups. Weather could cancel the noon opening. The lineup includes Cindy Schott Raymond Eastwood Kathleen Hird John Garcia and groups like the Lawrence Chamber Music Ensemble Sweet Adelines and the Mike Shurtz Quartet.
Sheriff reports three people hurt in two separate crashes. Randall Deruy, 19, and Patricia Mog, 21, were treated at Watkins Memorial Hospital after their car rolled several times on Clinton Blacktop Road near U.S. 59. A third victim, John Wickey, 20, escaped serious harm after his truck slid off a county road northeast of Lawrence. the vehicle suffered rear spring damage.
A 24 year old Kansas City man Timothy Brooke McDermott was found shot to death Friday in a field southwest of Vinland Douglas County deputies said his cousin Ray Williams found him near Williams home. Authorities reported shotgun wounds to the neck and chin and no foul play is suspected. Rosary and funeral services were planned at St Johns Catholic Church with burial at Oak Hill Cemetery. He is survived by his mother Donna McDermott and siblings James Mennie and Deda.
Firefighters answered a 2:44 p.m. call north of the airport where a truck overturned and Douglas County sheriff deputies directed removal. No fire or damage resulted. A trash fire near 710 Mass St. at 10:56 a.m. burned briefly but was extinguished with only doused flames. A lint fire in a clothes dryer at 2313 Westdale Rd. caused minor smoke damage and was contained by firemen.
In Minneapolis 800 AAUP delegates vote on a committee statement denouncing Nixon administration remarks as a direct threat to academic freedom. Amid heated campus disorder debates, officials including Attorney General Mitchell urged firm action.
Margaret Shuck, 12, Baldwin seventh grader from Marion Springs, competed among about 90 youngsters in Topeka for the All Kansas Spelling Bee. Lawrence and KU notes mention community club activity and a televised spring football game at Kansas University with Pepper Rodgers providing color commentary.
