Costly U S Week Killing 23 Helicopters 10 Planes Lost

Saigon AP reports the U S Command tallies 23 helicopters and 10 fixed wing aircraft lost in the past week in Vietnam. Total U S losses reach 2 585 helicopters and 2 681 planes. Viet Cong and North Vietnamese casualties exceed 38 000 since Feb 23 with heavy enemy material looted by allied forces.

Pentagon Aides Move to Litton After Defense Growth

A Litton Industries rise in defense contracting followed by hiring two former high Pentagon officials. Thomas D. Morris, former assistant secretary of defense for procurement, and Alain C. Knowen, ex assistant secretary for systems analysis, joined Litton after the Johnson era. The Navy also awarded Litton's Ingalls Shipbuilding a potential 1 billion dollar contract for an amphibious ship, LHA.

Perry Firm Low Bidder For Road Construction

N. R. Hamm Contracting Co. of Perry Kansas posted the apparent lowest bid at 507 848 for building up to 10 miles of access roads to six Perry Reservoir public use areas. The government estimate stood at 575 151 with only one other bid disclosed.

Auto production dips in GM strike week

Auto motive News estimates the week’s total at 161,545 cars, far below 180,150 the previous week and 211,670 a year ago. Chevrolet output fell to 25,810 from 44,066 as GM plants and Fisher Body units faced labor disputes.

Fire sale at Duckwall's draws huge crowd in Hillcrest Center

District manager C. K. Kean called the Thursday event comical at times as shoppers mobbed Duckwall's for smoke damaged goods from the Yuk Up fire. Store manager Ruel Thompson said it was possibly the town's best sale. Many stood in lines up to three hours. some bought multiple items, and the store extended hours to clear crowds.

Art in Park Show Scheduled Sunday

The eighth annual Art in the Park Festival runs noon to 5 p.m. Sunday in South Park with 350 items from amateur and professional artists across all media. Demonstration artists in portraits jewelry and watercolors will work, banners by nearly 30 Guild members and entrants will be on display, and musician groups will perform. The event may be cancelled if rain begins at noon. Last year 5 000 visitors viewed the exhibits and $3 085 in articles were sold.

Theft of Wheel Covers Reported in City Lot

Bob Taylor reports three wheel covers worth 35 dollars taken from his car parked on a city lot in the 900 block of N H Street. Police cite disturbances with youths throwing rocks at passing vehicles at two nearby intersections and note a loud party at 1016 Alabama Street.

Baker Plans Married Student Housing Approved by Board

James E B Doty, Baker University president, said the Board of Trustees approved studying plans for married student housing on the Baker campus. A final decision is set for the fall meeting October 9 after a summer study of proposals.

Local Traffic Accidents Reported With No Serious Injuries

Judith A. Weese 27 of DeSoto shaken after a passenger car crash at 2 15 p m in the 1700 block of W 23rd Lawrence police say no hospitalization. Ronald D. Weese 33 of DeSoto drove a car that collided with Anna L. Kabler 21 of 2160 W 26th St as Kabler turned left into a private drive. Damages 825 for the Weese car and 250 for Kabler. Police also investigated three other major crashes with one more person reporting minor injuries.

Washington AP reports Rep. Claude Pepper says the new House crime committee will seek ideas from ordinary citizens in major cities. He argues the public has been unheard by crime commissions and suggests citizen input could reveal overlooked solutions. The panel has broad inquiry power but cannot directly draft laws.

Accident Victim Listed as Good After One-Vehicle Crash

Richard J. Zasadny, 18, of 1146 Tenn. St., is reported in good condition at Watkins Memorial Hospital after a Thursday afternoon crash about 2 1/2 miles south and 2 miles west of Lawrence. He was a KU freshman riding with Edward E. Teeter, 22, who was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Teeter’s car skidded and struck a tree stump after losing control on a curve, per the Kansas Highway Patrol.
