Kendra Frazier, eighth grade from Altamont Grade School, won the All Kansas Spelling Bee at Washburn University beating 98 rivals. She spelled noisome after earlier feats like catamaran and hypercritical to seal the crown. Her sisters Angela and Erica died in a 1990s car crash. her family has a long spelling heritage. Kendra advances to the National Spelling Bee on June 13.
Wayne Laugesen, formerly of the Salina Journal, and his wife Dede from Colorado created a kids oriented religious video titled Holy Baby Seven Prayers in Seven Languages. The 30 minute production teaches the rosary to children up to age five in English French Spanish Latin Vietnamese German and Portuguese with music and animation. Released August 15 2003 the video has sold about 10 000 copies and expanded to religious stores after Catholic outlets and a Chicago faith festival exposure.
