The Mirth Café at 745 N H is named Lawrence’s Best Wi Fi Hotspot. Open daily 7 am to 10 pm since 2006, it offers Venezuelan coffee, a relaxed space, rotating menu specials, and local art with patrons allowed to bring their own wine age 21 and up. Honorable mentions include Java Break, the Lawrence Public Library, and Borders.
The Dusty Bookshelf wins best bookstore nod for Lawrence and Manhattan. Opened in Manhattan in 1985 and in Lawrence in 1996, it stocks over 70,000 titles from the community, buys scholarly libraries, offers half off mass market titles, and even sells rare texts online. Alice the cat greets visitors as shelves spill onto the floor. Postcards and Alice on Tshirts are available, with staff offering "special order" help.
