Lawrence approves grant for Santa Depot architectural work

Lawrence city commissioners unanimously accepted an 87,563 federal grant to fund architectural work on restoring the 1950s Santa Depot at Seventh and New Jersey streets. The grant requires a 25,000 city match, but the city does not own the building and won’t assume ownership without grant money for about 600,000 in repairs and code upgrades. The commission chose not to reject the grant, hoping it funds the remaining design work while ownership questions remain unresolved.
