EU officials defend private planes as time efficient for leaders while critics cite high costs and uneven pricing. KU records show 215 trips costing 709955, 288 trips costing 24,00010 to athletics, and Washington trips totaling 142877, amid rising aviation expenses and calls for accountability.
From July 1 2009 to Sept 30 2014 KU officials logged 709 955 in Chancellor office trips 288 KU Athletics trips cost 24 million 643 medical outreach trips cost 16 million. The Journal World notes KU flights exclude sports teams and critics call private planes costly and wasteful while some peers fly commercially.
Kansas Athletics had near 97.7 million in revenue last year yet flights on KU jets are paid with public funds. FAA rules prohibit accepting payment from KU Athletics for flights. KU operates under Part 91 noncommercial rules, restricting compensation to aircraft owners, while Part 135 for charter operations imposes stricter pilot, maintenance, and safety standards.
