Topeka man pleads no contest to murder case
A Topeka man formerly known as Phillip Cheatham Jr pleaded no contest to capital murder and attempted first degree murder in the 2003 killings of two women and wounding a third. Conviction overturned for ineffective counsel, 25 years before parole possible. sentencing set for March 20.

Roadwork and detours in Lawrence for water line and new diamond interchange
Water line work continues on Ninth Street at New Hampshire in Lawrence with westbound closures and a detour via Connecticut to Eighth or 10th Street. Demolition starts on a new apartment complex south of 11th Street between Mississippi and Indiana, removing public on street parking on the south side of 11th, east side of Mississippi, and west side of Indiana through July 2016. A separate project to build a diamond interchange at Kansas Highway 10 and Bob Billings Parkway 15th Street will run weekdays daylight hours, causing a detour on the South Lawrence Trafficway trail between Sixth Street and Bob Billings Parkway with minimal motorist impacts.
