Zoning changes eyed for Lawrence shopping districts

LawrenceDouglas County Planning Commission will study new district classifications including a possible community shopping center and revise neighborhood shopping rules to fit their names. They will also review upgrading existing centers such as the Malls Gibson's and Holiday Plaza. A separate bid to allow private clubs in C2 districts drew opposition led by Barbara Bishop, prompting postponement and a planning commission recommendation to deny.

City OKs Bowersock deal ending century control

Lawrence city commissioners unanimously approved closing the April agreement with private firms to transfer control of four acres at the western end of the Bowersock levee. The move enables possible cosmetic improvements while a separate Fibreboard matter and city hall site deliberations proceed.

Valleyview Care Home administrator Kathy Smith asks for a 1978 budget of 414 800 up from 341 370 with most costs covered by the home's income. The 6 6 percent county subsidy would rise to 68 200. Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Travis Brann requests 42 485 for 1978, about 25 000 reimbursed by federal civil defense grants, a 9 000 local tax increase. Brann seeks a 14 400 salary, a full time secretary clerk, a county car, and upgrades to radio gear and sirens.

Missing Lawrence youths spur Kaw River search

Police and fire teams resumed patrols along the Kansas River banks from Lawrence to Eudora after two Lawrence youths, a black boy and a white girl aged 14 to 16, were reported missing. Earlier, witnesses saw three boys in an orange raft disappear near Bowersock Dam Saturday night. a raft and life jackets were found, but no missing youths tied to the trio have been confirmed.

Bradley dispute over superintendent remarks clarified

The Journal-World corrected a typesetter error quoting Lawrence District 497 board member Bill Bradley. His real remark when voting no on Sept. Carl Knox's salary raise was that the superintendent and I don't agree on everything.

Crash Fatality Near Olathe Ends In Eudora Man’s Death

A 19 year old rural Eudora man Ernest M Kinzle died at Kansas University Medical Center from injuries from a Sunday head on collision on Kansas highway 150 east of Olathe. He was thrown or restrained in a car driven by 16 year old John W Francisco of Olathe. The truck driver Jimmy A Greer 42 of Pleasant Hill Missouri remained in serious condition at the hospital. No charges filed. The article includes a historical note that the Thirty Years War ended in 1648.

Term begins for Gardner exam planned

James R. Gardner 18 was moved today to the Kansas State Industrial Reformatory at Hutchinson to begin a minimum 30 year term for the February slaying of Margaret Maxey 46. He pleaded guilty to second degree murder in May with a doubled minimum due to a prior Texas felony. Gardner must undergo evaluation at the Kansas Reception and Diagnostic Center within 120 days. His brother Joseph Jr. 22 is at the reformatories for a battery conviction and faces Sept 14 trial on a first degree murder charge in the same case.

Supreme Court blocks immediate Hyde Amendment funding cut

The Supreme Court refused to halt federal Medicaid funding for abortions not necessary to save lives and sent the Hyde amendment question to Judge John Doling in Brooklyn for review.
