Drug tax break takes effect as Kansas laws roll out

In Topeka the 1977 Kansas Legislature completes 80 percent of its work as a $4.1 million yearly tax relief for prescription drugs insulin and certain medical devices becomes official Friday. Other measures include tax changes wage rules and aging and welfare provisions with some actions delayed to Jan 1 1978 or 1979.

Show to feature Arabian horses at Sunflower Benefit

The Sunflower Benefit Horse Show will feature three Arabian classes on the second night at the Douglas County fair grounds starting 6 p.m. A UPHA challenge cup saddle seat class for under 17 from Kansas and Missouri is included, with multiple western and harness events. Proceeds benefit Cottonwood Inc. First night drew 166 entries and prize money for top four finishers in 13 events.

Robert Hall stores closed as parent orders inventories

The Robert Hall clothing chain faced an uncertain future after UM&M Inc. ordered all 366 stores closed for inventory taking on a Wednesday night. Executive VP Philip Kirshen said reopening status was unknown, amid UM&M plans to wind down the operation following years of heavy losses.

State agencies accumulate excess licensing fees in probe

Twenty one state licensing and regulatory agencies have gathered over 2 million dollars in excess fees in the last five years, possibly violating state law. The Post Audit Committee heard that some agencies ended fiscal year 1976 with nine times the required balance, with mixed responses from agencies on lowering fees or changing the law.

Damage report deadline extended for flood counties

The state Division of Emergency Preparedness extended the damage report deadline by 24 hours for eastern Kansas flood counties. Douglas County has submitted estimates totaling 271000 for businesses and residents and 183000 for crops. Chautauqua County reported the loudest flood damages as officials await further reports.
