Local floods in Lawrence this year pale beside the 1951 deluge when rainfall peaked in June and July. Residents recall two floods that year, with 1951 causing $3.2 million in damage and 1,700 evacuated.
Investigation into the stabbing of Donald Lee Lynch at the Kansas State Prison in Lansing continues. Lynch, 28, serving life plus 10 to 21 years for kidnapping and first degree robbery, was found dead in his cell. His accomplice Bruce Sparks also serves a lengthy sentence.
More than 3,000 people lined up to view Judy Garland's body as doors opened after noon. The actress lay in a silver lame gown she wore at her fifth wedding, in a white metal coffin surrounded by light blue velvet and yellow flowers.

Former heavyweight boxing champion Joe Louis suffered a heart attack and was rushed to Beekman Downtown Hospital after collapsing on a downtown street. The 55 year old, in New York to announce the Joe Louis Food Franchise Corp with Billy Conn as vice president, held condition unclear.
Israeli warplanes engaged Soviet built MIG21 fighters over the Gulf of Suez today. The army spokesman said two Egyptian jets were shot down in the encounter as Israeli patrols confronted the opposing squadron.
