Nine-Man Squad Safety Officers Named Today in Lawrence

The nine men chosen to fill Lawrence's first safety officer unit were announced by director Gilbert Smith. Names include Kennard Avey Stephen Cook Roy Demery Thomas Jackson Robert Lemon Wilford Ousdahl Gale Pinegar Larry Stemmerman John Stevens. They will train starting Monday and operate by Sept. 1 with base salaries of 538 dollars.

Street Flooding Causes Accident In Lawrence

Ronald A. Devers, 23, Rt. 3, lost control of his southbound car on Massachusetts Street at 10:54 p.m. The car struck a metal light pole with $550 damage to the car and $200 to the pole. A second crash involved Martha F. Zelinski, 38, and Harshad S. Modi, 27, at 9th and Tenn. Sts as Modi changed lanes.

Driver Questioned After Two Incidents In Lawrence

Two 18 year olds rode in a red 1966 Chevelle in Lawrence and tried to strike pedestrians near 19th and La. Streets and at an outage site. A KP&L crew reported damage to a car hood and windshield with an estimated 175 dollars. No charges filed yet and city officials are reviewing the case.

Kansas Regents Say Faculty Policy Not Retroactive

The Kansas Board of Regents states its resolution to suspend disruptive faculty is not retroactive. It may suspend without pay only if specified, and has no effect on John Wright of human development and family life. A special ad hoc committee led by Paul Gilles will decide Wrights action regarding the May 9 stadium incident.

Lawrence storm splits tree. tax take steady. Perry Lake rising

Lawrence residents report storm damage as a tree split by lightning was seen in a yard. Douglas County tax collection reached 94 percent of 1968 levy, with 9.26 million dollars collected versus 9.85 million due. Perry Reservoir rose to 882.5 feet, expected to climb to the 891-foot normal pool later this year. Severe storm rocks Kansas and Missouri with record floods

Up to 10 inches of rain and 100 mph winds unleashed a massive squall line from South Central Kansas into Iowa. Flooding threatened the Little Blue and Marais Des Cygnes rivers, highways closed, and Missouri rivers floodplains expanded. Nude in Window Faces Trial Here

A 22 year old man posted $100 bond to appear in Lawrence municipal court after being arrested on an indecent exposure charge. He stood nude in a window at 709 Mass. St and made obscene gestures as women passed. Police say he acted similarly on June 17 19 and other occasions. A related case involved a 23 year old man treated for hysteria after being found at 5th and Ill with only a tee shirt and socks. No charges filed in that incident. Dr J J Underwood reported an $498 loss of an 18 horsepower boat motor from his yard Wednesday night.

Two Injured In Junction Collision Near Baldwin Junction

Ray Schmidt aged unknown of 1735 West 20th Street was treated and released at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after a 7 p.m. Thursday crash with Stephen C. Borenz 21 of Menasha Wisconsin a U.S. Air Force member at Richards-Gebaur Base Grandview Missouri. Borenzs car damage was about 350 dollars while Schmidts damage was not yet estimated. A second incident on a county road 90 miles south of Eudora at 4 45 p.m. Thursday left Lois W. Kreighbaum Baldwin with minor injuries and taken to a Gardner hospital after she was thrown from her car which rolled onto its left side following a hill crest and a swerve to avoid a horse rider. Her car damage was about 500 dollars.
