The Madison Square Garden session opened amid cheers for Woodrow Wilson and Pat Harrison as delegates filled the hall. Speakers and demonstrations stretched across party lines with preparations to organize the convention underway and temporary officers named for the prelude to a lasting Democratic unity.
June 24 reports from New York recount sensational claims that tickets to the Democratic National Convention were unfairly distributed. J Bruce Kremer, Montana vice chair and tickets chair, called the charges ridiculous and unfounded as crowds surged for admission. Delegates and alternates were supplied, but many visitors led to unrest at the convention halls. Kremer offered to show receipts to back his statements. Demand for tickets was historically high among party members and others.
New York June 24 The long established two thirds rule governing nominations of candidates for president and vice president was approved for retention by an overwhelming vote at the first meeting today of the Democratic convention committee on rules. Only three votes were cast for abrogation of the two thirds rule. Delegates from Texas Florida and Tennessee recorded the votes.
The Eli Ferrell Dorsey Post of the American Legion is designated to help veterans obtain benefits under the federal adjusted compensation act. Supplies of application blanks have arrived from Washington and will be available at the post. Veterans or dependents eligible include honorably discharged service members below certain ranks and immediate family of deceased veterans.
James Shipley and Harry Lardon were bound over for trial after waiving preliminary hearing before Justice John Clark. They face charges of robbing Louis Lee and attempting to steal his Chalmers touring car on Sunday morning. Borden goes to November term. Shipley to juvenile court. A Blackwell Oklahoma wire said the boy is fifteen and had no prior difficulties. his father would travel to Lawrence tomorrow.
At the Democratic national convention in New York McAdoo holds steady strategy with advisers while Bryan leads early speakers. Georgia delegates visit. 2900 tickets denied, campaign disputes 2000 official tickets. Davis urges Kansas delegates to back McAdoo.
Wheat fields show mixed readiness with some ready for cutting while others are blown down or light yields expected. County agent Coglazier forecasts about 25 bushels per acre on good wheat, eight to twelve on lighter patches. Oat prospects look decent though not as heavy as prior years. quality praised. Local officials note levee inspections by Prof Oman and concerns over gopher pests. Also announced are summer travels of L N Lewis and Mrs Hugh Means to Buena Vista Colorado. Edith Larsen named for high school honor list.
Chamber of Commerce members toured the Lawrence Poultry Co plant at 832 Pennsylvania Street during the first Know Your City inspection. George R. Frazier guided the group through dressing rooms, chilling areas, and the egg breaking room where eight workers separate yolks and whites before freezing. The plant handles about 150 cases of eggs daily and ships dressed poultry plus frozen eggs to New York and St. Louis, with about 800 cans per car and three cargo cars weekly.
Two potato grading demonstrations will be held Saturday in Douglas county as part of the educational program for potato inspection service this year. J H Hoover of Washington DC and RE A Stokdyk of Manhattan will conduct the sessions at the L M Walters farm at 10 am and at Walter Witts farm at 2 pm. All interested in potato growth are invited to attend.

New York June 24 The following is the resolution prepared by Mrs Frank Reeves of the state of Washington for passage in tribute to Woodrow Wilson It will be presented and adopted at the conclusion of the regular Program today It reads Resolved That the democratic party of the nation in a convention assembled profoundly laments the death of that incomparable American Woodrow Wilson whose leadership and achievement constitute an epoch in the worlds history And now as a further mark of respect for his memory this convention will stand in recess.
Major Sam Clarke announced the annual Citizens Military Training camp at Fort Leavenworth from August 2 to 30. Applicants aged seventeen to twenty four may enroll, with July 14 as the closing date. Last year nine Lawrence youths attended. the government covers all expenses. Four courses offered basic, red, white, and blue. training ranges from elementary to officer reserve corps preparation.
Excavation for the Journal-World building unearthed a sealed cellar filled with ashes, a bronze mortar, heat-scarred bottles, and fused glass. Bottles bear the imprint Block & Brandon Leavenworth City Kansas Territory, suggesting a druggist's shop. Local memory of the raid era business at 720 Massachusetts remains unclear.
Dr Baldwin of Iowa State College will speak at Fraser chapel during the second All Summer Session Convocation at 10 in the morning and again at 8 in the evening. W H Johnson notes talks will interest faculty and students. Dean Swarthout will oversee singing with several old time songs, and a group of ballads will feature the hour. Also news of clothing workers strike in New York City as 40000 vote to strike tomorrow after efforts to end harsh conditions.
Woodlawn school construction progresses toward a cornerstone ceremony planned by the PTA and school authorities. Tentative plans include a mayoral letter of invitation and a speech by an alumnus, with an Adese by the mayor if possible. The floor slab awaits pouring, footings and foundations are prepared, and the contractor aims to finish by November 1 despite weather risks.
Five men reported missing after a naphtha explosion on the British freighter Beremont Castle in Brooklyn. Eight others seriously injured as 100,000 gallons of high test aviation gasoline and 100,000 gallons of naphtha plus motor oil fueled a blaze. The vessel towed to the East River and sunk. five men remained trapped in the hold. Charles Keller of Standard Oil was among the missing.
New York June 24 Red Etchen of Coffeyville Kansas captain of the American Olympic trap shooting team won the individual championship of England in the pre Olympic competitions in London. He needed a 200 straight to seal the victory. Mrs Etchen wife of the American captain and holder of Kansas women's state title won the British women's Hogby with 99 of 100. The American team also captured the British team championship with 589 hits. Separately baseball scores and a Merchants Bureau dinner notice follow.
