City considers mill levy rises and radios buy for safety
Taxes Corliss floated mill levy increases to fund more police, wages, and city items, while Dever backed raising the levy to add officers. Plans range 2.8 to 3.6 mills, including 1.7 mills for the library, for five to 14 more police positions. Officials also debated using 1 million of the 7.6 million infrastructure sales tax reserve to buy new police, fire, public works, and utilities radios, with total cost about 2 million, funding the rest from reserves. The sales tax, approved in 2008, permits safety infrastructure upgrades. Debates continue on health insurance reserves and premium changes as the 2012 budget approval nears.

Kansas abortion clinics review new licensing rules provoke debate
Clinics received copies of updated regulations dated the same day licenses were required. Planned Parenthood said it may sue over the process. The law imposes annual inspections, potential fines, and court actions to shut clinics not meeting standards. Officials stress rapid adoption to avoid service interruptions. Pro and anti abortion groups frame the move as either unfair rush or safety compliance. Local clinics include Planned Parenthood Overland Park, Center for Women’s Health, and Aid for Women in Kansas City.
