Lawrence Mayor Aron Cromwell warned a tax hike will be hard to avoid as 2012 city revenues look $1.2 million short of expenses. City Commissioners meet at 4 PM to review 11 mill levy scenarios ranging from 1.7 to 4.6 mills, with a 1 mill rise adding about $23 on a $200,000 home.
A 26 member volunteer group called the Central and East Lawrence Elementary School Consolidation Working Group will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at district headquarters to outline recommendations for reducing the number of elementary schools in the Lawrence district. Leader Rick Doll says the board charged the group with determining how to consolidate six east and central schools into three or four, while members note funding and flexibility concerns as possible alternatives.
The city approves an Iron Chef style competition and festival at Watson Park hosted by Teller's, with a 2000 square foot enclosure for a large refrigerated food truck, stadium seating, and a $20 ticket for tasting all three Teller's chefs. The Lawrence Originals group returns for a third year with food booths, activities, live music, and a 9:45 pm fireworks display.
