Commission weighs future of Valley View home

Kansas county commissioners consider leasing or buying the Valley View home for adult care versus building a new facility. Innovative Health of Kansas seeks to continue operations on site, while Retirement Management Co plans a new facility with interim lease. The decision, deemed among their toughest, follows a Jan. 13 vote to close the home within three years. The 7 tonight meeting at the Douglas County Courthouse will hear proposals and community input.

Sidewalk dining approved for half sidewalk outside Mass Street Deli

Lawrence city commissioners approved former Mayor Bob Schumm's plan to use half the sidewalk outside the 941 Mass Deli for bistro dining. The move aims to create a relaxed downtown cafe atmosphere with food revenue dominating at least 70 percent and alcohol capped at 30 percent. An agreement will set per square foot annual sidewalk fees and use conditions, hoping other restaurants follow suit.

Water-logged hole baffles city officials

City officials fight to stop water flow into a large pit north of the Kansas River bridge on North Second Street. A 30 inch broken pipe washed out soil, detouring traffic. A 15 by 25 foot hole holds about 10 feet of water. Workers will insert balls into the storm sewer to stop the flow, then drain and repair. One worker fell in but was not seriously hurt. another required stitches.
