The Commerce Department reports the U S merchandise trade deficit rose 0.3 percent in April to 10.49 billion, the worst showing in over four years, driven by higher imports of foreign oil and cars. Exports fell 1.3 percent. The Japan deficit hit 5.5 billion, the highest since 1987.
At the AMA semiannual meeting in Chicago doctors defend six figure incomes against comparisons to executives and athletes. Noting costs of medical training and long hours, they question Hillary Clinton's health reform. Pediatrician Joy Maxey, from Atlanta, contrasts pay with Mrs Clinton’s 203000 and 78000 earned for 70 hours. most doctors fear reform could affect pay. The five day gathering wraps up today.

Democrats pushed President Clinton deficit reduction bill through the Senate Finance Committee replacing an energy tax with a gasoline tax hike and Medicare cuts. The plan mirrors the House version with higher taxes on the rich business and some Social Security recipients. The gasoline tax would rise 4.3 cents to boost funding amid calls to cut spending.
The $60 million Steven Spielberg thriller Jurassic Park opened Friday at Dickinson Theatres in Lawrence drawing sellout crowds and strong family interest. Local staff report full-capacity shows and praise the PG 13 rating though critics warn of graphic violence. Some experts caution such depictions may harm young viewers.
