Two Lawrence school board members urged cutting costs as administrators proposed over 1 million in new expenditures plus 1.33 million more for teacher salaries next year. Supt Azinger warned cuts would reduce services and programs in an expanding district.
Energy costs led the May CPI decline with a 1 percent drop the largest since March 1991 while gasoline and fuel oil fell. Food prices rose 0.6 percent driven by fruit and vegetable gains 2.1 percent. Overall inflation eased with the annual pace around 3.5 percent year to date.
President Clinton voiced strong support for Ruth Bader Ginsburg as clearly pro choice and urged the Senate to confirm her before the fall term. He said she is thoughtful on law and enrolled in ensuring women’s rights while acknowledging questions on Roe v Wade. Ginsburg planned meetings with Senate Judiciary members.
Wendy Brewer, mother of 23 month old Eric who was beaten to death in February 1992, recalls vicious calls and community outrage. Public works director George Williams says a 30 inch storm sewer pipe broke causing a deep mucky pit north of the Kansas River bridge on North Second Street. Crews from Kansas City brought in a trench box as they seek to reconnect the line and restore traffic flow likely within one to two weeks depending on progress.
The installation at the north end of Buford M. Watson Jr. Park proceeds amid controversy as Dan Rockhill and 41 other artists from Kansas and several states submitted designs reflecting Lawrence's history. The project moves forward with footings poured, forms set, and steel work underway.
