Drop in energy prices keeps inflation down

Energy costs led the May CPI decline with a 1 percent drop the largest since March 1991 while gasoline and fuel oil fell. Food prices rose 0.6 percent driven by fruit and vegetable gains 2.1 percent. Overall inflation eased with the annual pace around 3.5 percent year to date.

Leak source in Kansas River bridge area pit prompts repair work

Public works director George Williams says a 30 inch storm sewer pipe broke causing a deep mucky pit north of the Kansas River bridge on North Second Street. Crews from Kansas City brought in a trench box as they seek to reconnect the line and restore traffic flow likely within one to two weeks depending on progress.
