Berlin reports renewed fighting on the Somme front as Haig presses for a decisive blow while Berlin admits retreats. Italy gains ground at Corne Cavento and Germany offers peace terms to Russia via Swiss mediators, aiming for economic ties and territorial stabilization.
General Pershing starts his duties in France with a tour of the new American army HQ in Paris. He reviews requests to transfer American personnel from allied armies and meets with Marshal Petain to discuss initial work and arrangements for the American forces.
The transport Annam was torpedoed on June 11 in the Ionian while under escort and sank within hours after being towed. Official reports state there were no casualties. The 6075 ton vessel, built in 1899, was owned in Marseilles.
Washington reports show only Atlanta finished tabulating while other districts sent in large subscriptions still arriving. Estimated national total climbs toward near three billion dollars as Kansas City and St Louis districts each tally about 90 million.

He will share personal observations of their needs. Miss Myrtle Hubbard visits Lawrence then leaves for Princeton before returning to Fort Smith Arkansas.

Douglas county gears up for a countywide Red Cross drive with sixty meetings in schools and churches next week. C. J. Lane county superintendent has prepared the plan for the rural school commencement to be held in Lawrence high school auditorium on June 22 at 7:30 PM. About 140 county rural pupils will receive diplomas with O. J. Lane presenting them. program includes invocation by Dr. J. E. Stauffer music by Miss Frances Allen reading by Miss Florence Banker commencement address by Professor Rathion A. Schwegler and diploma presentation. J. E. Vischer to return tomorrow from Burr Oak.
James A. Kimball of Salina named state manager and purchasing agent for 17 institutions and sworn in with a salary of 5000 dollars annually. Lee Harrison elected secretary at 2000 dollars. Board to oversee seven educational, six charitable, four penal institutions starting July 1.
Berlin briefing says American troops will arrive in significant numbers only in 1918 due to transport limits. The general staff estimates American forces as a negligible factor in overall force calculations. Reports indicate probable French and British offensives, with large French and British losses and air raid aims to train defenses in England.
A committee from the Chamber of Commerce invited Dr Wilbur N Mason to deliver the Fourth of July address in Baldwin. Mason, recently named to the State Board of Administration, said he would be glad to speak if not hindered by prior duties. He formerly headed Baker University for many years and is noted as an effective administrator and educator.
The Douglas County Professional Institute begins Monday June 18 at Lawrence High School for six days. Enrollment at 8:00 am precedes a full schedule of lectures on household science art hygiene and home economy led by professors and Miss Sallie G Karr with discussions and relaxation periods throughout the day.
