Washington reports delays in cantonment construction threaten the opening of training camps for the first increment of 650000 troops. Officials say no fixed start date exists and August will see the first officers released to clear space for the next draft and training units.
The annual report shows 2,723 pupils in the city school system with 2,722 enrolled this year. Forty more girls than boys, 61 grade school teachers and 30 in the high school. Current expenses total 94252 dollars. Forty four percent of pupils graduate.
Tomorrow marks the second day of ladies swimming classes at the M C A. Enrollment is strong and attendance is expected to rise. Classes begin at 9 30 for ages 12 to 19, then ladies and high school girls join, with office girls class at 11.
An explosion at Steinfeld munitions depots near Vienna injuries and deaths are reported. Officials say three depots destroyed with about 100 initially reported missing or injured. unofficial tallies indicate six killed and 300 wounded in the blast.
Root commission members attended a service in the Winter Palace imperial chapel and toured the building now partly used as a military hospital. They spoke with wounded soldiers and nurses and viewed imperial galleries while hundreds of peasants were brought through the palace.
A marriage license was issued this morning by probate judge C. E. Lindley to Louis S. Miller of Seattle Washington and Mary Rose Settle of Wichita Kansas. Mrs. Sallie Sullivan, visiting her aunt Mrs. H. D. Macou ber, left Saturday for her Minneapolis home.

Paris dispatch reports Benny Woodworth of San Francisco chief of the first section of the American ambulance field service was killed when his aircraft failed to rise during a visit with Lincoln Chaikoff in the Lafayette escadrille. Chaikoff was badly wounded as the machine plunged to the ground.

A Topeka girl sent a two pound box of candy to a University of Kansas law student after he predicted she would earn a top grade. The student comforted her after her exam, the bet was made, and she mailed the candy upon earning a perfect score. Resolutions of sympathy were read for Earl Edwards, drowned in Potter lake, as his father William Edwards and A G Mitchell attended his funeral in Caney.
The Dutch queen’s husband is effectively a prisoner of war as his captors are their own household objects. The princely consort faces charges for aiding in the escape of interned Germans by smuggling through Dutch authorities.
Fay Livengood of the American Committee for Armenian and Syrian relief spoke at three Lawrence meetings. A local committee was formed led by James D. Faxon with Lottie B. Skofstad as secretary and Dudley Asher treasurer to collect funds for Turkish war zone relief. Livengood urged ten cents a day to save a life and two dollars a month to support an orphan child.
Six colored youths appeared in police court charged with turning in a false alarm from Nurvth Lawrence yesterday. They denied involvement and were sent to the juvenile court. Officer Thorpe arrested them near the stockyards office after observing them enter the area before the call. The alarm claimed a 500 block Perry Street fire, but the area had only a potato patch. In other matters a man fined 3.50 for drunkenness. Motorcyclists’ speeding cases continued. Weather: fair tonight and Tuesday, cooler, northwest winds. Kansas City visitor Arnold Lynch in town two weeks.
County residents learn district captains will lead door to door fundraising starting Saturday to raise 35 000 for the national Red Cross 100 000 000 fund. J C Stevenson arranged district lines and captains list includes Hicks Spray Swaim Miller McFarland Washington Sullivan Baldwin Albright Hawley Burton Gleason Gilpes Hyland Benjamin O Neil Soward Olmstead Breithaupt Hoskinson Stanley Gabriel and others with detailed township coverage throughout Wakarusa Marion Willow Springs Palmyra and Valmyra townships.
Three members of the School of Fine Arts faculty will perform in Fraser hall chapel at 8 15 p m Wednesday. Harriett Greissinger Anna Sweeney and W B Downing headline a program including Beet hoven variations La Matin Le Sevillan and selections from Wagner and Chaminade. A large crowd is expected following last week's concert.
The Douglas County professional teachers institute opened in the high school auditorium with over fifty enrolled and expected to rise to seventy five. The day’s program featured assembly exercises, lectures by Rev. G. B. Thompson and Prof. Raymond A. Thwegler, discussions, relaxations, and a supper with various topics on cooking sewing and general knowledge.

Four women enrolled at the University of Kansas for the summer session say they have no homes. A total of 570 summer students live in Kansas with 54 non residents. The group includes students from Oklahoma Nebraska Texas Indiana Kentucky Rhode Island Arkansas New Mexico California Ohio Illinois and Japan. The average age is higher than for the regular year and occupations vary from teachers to ministers and insurance agents. In summer the gender balance shifts to 355 women and 267 men, with 81 fewer than last year. Some men are medical students kept in school by government needs for military physicians. The engineering school also offers army training courses. Mr and Mrs Macourber moved to a new home and Mr Walter Schriner left for Chicago.
A Kansas Construction Company crew resumes excavation on the new Lawrence water plant on Indiana Street. Structures on the site will be moved to avoid delaying piping work, which starts in a few weeks once labor is available. Buildings were auctioned for 626 dollars, with buyers to remove remains to clear the site.
About eighty KU law school graduates line up in Topeka for the state bar examination in the supreme court rooms amid exemptions for a Fort Riley contingent. The list includes numerous Kansas City and Lawrence entrants among others, with first carver lecture scheduled at Fraser hall by T. N. Carver of Harvard.
L. E. Gibson formerly of Lawrence was arrested in Emporia yesterday for issuing and delivering a check on a bank with insufficient funds. The trial is set for Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock before Justice Manley.
H L Winey and H B Sparks of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce traveled to Topeka for the Kansas Retailers association session where Winey serves as a state officer. Sparks also attended the Wednesday session. The chamber plans discussion of a July 4 celebration and closing unfinished business. Dan Childs spent Sunday in Kansas City.
