The Liberty Loan is oversubscribed with banks and thousands of small investors submitting late subscriptions. New York Chicago Cleveland and Boston districts lead, while Atlanta and Kansas City lag behind initial minimums. Kansas City reports around 16 million in sub, St. Louis shows 40 million against an 80 million district allotment.
John Woodruff of 115 Vermont Street gave each of his five children a liberty bond despite wartime hardship. Kansas news reports a push to utilize idle land, urging land under cultivation and even leasing 90 acres for plow. Meanwhile Y W Glassen from the University of Kansas accepts a Cornell offer to lead farm natural history lab work Carnell. Marjorie Templin, KU graduate and Red Cross dietician, to France. Acacia Lodge grants second degree work in a regular meeting at the Masonic Temple.
Major Paul Malone in charge of enrollments for military instruction in the central department says blanks for aspirants to the second reserve officer training camps will be sent to him Monday in Chicago. The August camp opens and federal service Guardsmen may apply through regular channels and be ordered to training. Guardsmen not in federal service need a general approval from the adjutant general and discharge or furlough during training.
RILEY PAYROLL $1 000 000 Amount Will More Than Double This By Middle of August Junction City June 15 For the month of May the payrolls and expenses at Fort Riley exceeded $1 000 000 according to an announcement made today. Within the next sixty days the payroll and expenses including government supplies will be more than double this amount each month. Two Speeders Paid Fines Four alleged speeders were up before Judge C S Finch this morning for violation of city ordinances. Two entered pleas of guilty and paid fines of $6 50 each. A third was found guilty and filed notice of an appeal. The fourth was dismissed. He was driving with his little daughter on his lap when overhauled by the motorcycle cop. He explained to the police judge that he had not been speeding that the car which the officer was chasing had passed him and dodged down a side street getting away. The officer admitted that he may have been mistaken in the identity of the car.
Berlin confirms British report of German retreat in the Belgian front sectors with British pressure at Zoliebeke and near the Douve. Reports from Copenhagen say several Norwegian ships were sunk with heavy loss. the British cruiser Avenger was torpedoed in the North Sea with all but one survivor saved.
At the final meeting of the Women's Home Missionary Society at the Methodist church, officers for the next year were elected led by Mrs. J. Luther Taylor of Pittsburg as president with H A Church Baldwin as vice president and other officers named from Chanute Manhattan Coffeyville McFarland Kansas City Kan and more. The group plans to meet elsewhere next year the executive council to choose the location in September and reports a large sum raised for home missions during a three day Lawrence session attended by about 150 delegates. The aim is to intensify missions during the present crisis and keep them active.
A Lawrence citizen delegation led by Mayor W J Francisco and Chancellor Frank Strong travels to Kansas City today to press Mayor Edwards for action on locating an interurban union station. Other Kansas towns join the effort amid ongoing disputes over site selection.
General Pershing plans an extended trip to the front and attends social and official events in Paris. A French academy greeting and June 28 public reception are arranged, while an American officer delegation tours French rail centers to study transport. Liberty Loan bonds begin trading above par on the New York Stock Exchange. Groundwork on Winona street concreting starts near the Santa Fe station. Women swim classes open. Y M C A war campaign discussed at a Stall meeting. Local Liberty Loan subscribers include Athens Council No 3 of the Fraternal Aid Union and the Knights of Columbus.
The federal inspection of Battery B Lawrence field artillery will be held this evening in Chamber of Commerce rooms. Captain Sharpe of Kansas City will inspect, with Adjutant General C J Martin present. The session starts at 7:45 PM, members urged to attend promptly as the battery nears official War Department recognition as Kansas National Guard.
Fay E. Livengood will speak at 10 30 on Turkey and the War with stories from personal experiences. Miss Belle Kearney follows at 8 00 with Russia as I saw it after world wide travels and audiences of ten thousand. The events are timely given the last three years.
Prof J N Van der Vries urges a $35000 Red Cross drive in Douglas county during next week’s campaign. He outlines Red Cross history and the need for swift support amid war relief efforts. A teachers meeting in Room 110 features Henderson Martin on the Red Cross Hundred Million Dollar Drive.
Miss Lena Miller Lawrence high school domestic science instructor gave the first in a series of free lectures on food science yesterday in the manual training building at 3 PM. Next Tuesday the topic is food values and planning balanced meals with other subjects including economical use of meats and milk as a food. All women are invited to attend. Leo Moore, Lawrence high school graduate and former K U student, was seriously injured June 9 in an explosion at the Hercules powder plant in San Diego and is expected to recover. Commissioner W R Green traveled to Kansas City on business.
Weather note reports generally fair conditions from yesterday into today with rising temperatures expected this afternoon and Saturday.
A large crowd attended the Elks Flag Day observance at F A U hall with school children veterans National Guardsmen Red Cross participants and the Elks. Speakers including Henderson Martin Mace and J R Cohn urged support for the Red Cross drive and patriotic ends while songs and solos accompanied by the First Regiment Band filled the program.
The Coburn Players bring three performances to Lawrence under the trees on the KU campus June 22 to 28. The program opens with The Yellow Jacket and continues with Much Ado About Nothing and Romeo and Juliet. Tickets go on sale at Fraser Room 119 and Round Corner Drug Store. Nine pairs of twins are highlighted at a Sunday School service in Mistlehurst.
The W C T A plans a flower day in Lawrence to benefit local girls and boys. Girls will roam the streets tomorrow tagging with banquets and the Trinity Lutheran church group will hike to Dikeman bridge under Dr E E Stauffer and Harry Ziesenis supervision.
Lawrence city officials move to restart work on the water plant Monday after a settlement with Kansas Construction Co. The city will pay $9,500 in damages from the halt, with extensions and possible bond funding to cover costs. The Utilities Commission is to approve the settlement basis as work restarts with up to fifteen teams and excavations beginning soon.
