Man jailed on probation violations in kidnapping case
Shane S. Allen, 32, of Lawrence appeared for a probation violation hearing and left in handcuffs. Prosecutor Eve Kemple urged detention citing alleged meth use and safety concerns. Allen was on probation since December 2016 for a felony aggravated battery linked to assault tied to a Tinder meeting with a University of Kansas student. A Missouri woman died after visiting him at his trailer. she was injured April 29 and died May 1 after surgery. No charges filed in that death as police investigate. A warrant for Allen’s arrest followed May 29 for new probation violations.

Firefighters battle long blaze at Lawrence scrap metal yard
Fire crews spent over five hours dousing a large scrap metal pile fire at the 12th and Haskell Recycling Center in eastern Lawrence. Reported shortly after 10 a.m., the fire produced a thick black plume visible for miles before managers declared it under control around 3:30 p.m.
