A crudely converted bus carrying 98 Mexican laborers crashed into a tree near Phoenix, bursting into flames after a fuel line break. Sixteen dead and 82 injured, the worst traffic crash in Arizona history, as driver Nate Manuel Gloria Jr. said he dozed at the wheel and planned to hand control to an assistant.

Louisiana Street paving project set for bid award by city
The City Commission will award the Louisiana Street paving contract Tuesday afternoon for a three lane southward section from Twenty-Third to the Malls Entrance with widening to a nearly normal width elsewhere. Bids for the project and for paving the 200 block on Illinois Street will be opened at the weekly meeting. Also on the docket are annexation actions east of Alabama and south of Twenty-Third and Edgewood Park Addition No 4 east of Haskell and south of Nineteenth, plus possible changes to an off street parking ordinance. The U S Navy delivered mail by guided missile for the first time. A Regulus missile launched from submarine Barbero at sea flew to Mayport Florida near Jacksonville delivering mail to the Navy auxiliary air station. The 600 mph flight covered about 100 miles in roughly two minutes.

Bell Plans Near Million Dollar Expansion for Lawrence
Southwestern Bell will invest nearly a million dollars in a two year expansion of Lawrence telephone service. Local manager W L Collinson announced plans including a major building addition at 734 Vt St and dial service rollout this summer in Clinton and Lone Star. The project adds 1 000 phone numbers, extends intercity rings to Lecompton, and funds new cable along West Eighth Street West Twenty Third Street Louisiana and East Fifteenth Street to boost current and future service. The city now has 14 248 phones and $3 028 million in construction since 1953 with a $379 000 yearly payroll.
