Pearl Harbor June 8 A once mighty Japanese naval force retreats westward from Midway Island after a devastating American defense offensive. Nimitz reports enemy withdrawal with heavy losses while U S ships suffer minor casualties. Messages of congratulations pour in from MacArthur and others as Hawaii remains jubilant.
The BBC warned residents of German-occupied French coast to evacuate inland, saying the area would become a theater of operations and that capital importance Allied actions would begin when advantageous. It urged leaving from Belgium to the Pyrenees, noting civilian danger and noting the measure as an effective precaution.

The Victoria reached an eastern United States port after the attack as Argentine naval officers studied the damage. Argentina and Chile are the only American nations with Axis relations. this attack marks the first on an Argentine vessel since the United States entered the war.

Harold Ingham and Major Bruett led the event which officials say achieved its objectives.
Topeka June 8 Randolph Carpenter a 48 year old Marion attorney and former congressman filed for the Democratic senatorial nomination He faces former Senator George McGill of Wichita who also seeks the seat Carpenter served two terms in Congress starting in 1932 then returned to private business He previously served two Kansas legislature terms authored the oil proration law and sat on the Marion board of education He is a University of Michigan law school graduate and served as a first lieutenant in a TSH company during World War I.
More than 400 Kansas youths attend the sixth American Legion sponsored Boys State in Wichita. Participants divided into Federalist and Nationalist parties vote for county and state officers this afternoon with a general election planned for tomorrow. Supreme court sessions legislative meetings and other government functions are slated for the week long encampment.
Fort Benning Georgia reports three Army airmen killed when a bomb dropped from a bomber struck another bombed plane during practice. The deceased are Captain Morris Pelham of Anniston Alabama Lieutenant Raymond Manley of Brooklyn New York and Corporal Ray Roland of Columbia Iowa.
The fourth annual Kansas reading institute opens at the Memorial Union building with about 90 enrolled by noon including teachers and summer students. A workshop adds next week with optional two hours credit for those in both sessions and an exhibit of publishers materials on display.

Wartime Civil Control Administration reports the mass evacuation of about 99,770 Japanese from a 150 mile wide zone in California Washington Oregon and southern Arizona is complete. The removals proceeded without great hardship and on schedule. Most evacuees are at 17 assembly centers with more centers being prepared for the war’s duration.
Guy V. Keeler announces an Open Night Class in Lawrence for defense drawing and blueprint reading. Taught by Prof. G W Bradshaw, the twelve week course runs June 10 to enhance employment prospects for men and women with high school education at Marvin Hall, University of Kansas.

Federal vehicle tax stamp for automobiles and trucks will be sold Wednesday June 10 at all regular Lawrence stamp windows. Stamp must be purchased by July 1 1942 and will be good until July 1 1943.
Douglas county faces a larger state sales tax residue this year with an estimated 93 000 and last year about 70 000. Welfare funds receive 27 500 this year and schools lose a proportional share due to distribution changes. The residue will reduce 1942 levies but cash arrives in 1943 except for school districts July budgets.
