Gang Chief Capone Faces Long Term Penalty
Chicago June 6 AP The chief of gang chiefs Alphonse Capone faces a possible 232 year penitentiary term and 80000 dollars in fines for alleged income tax evasion. He surrendered yesterday after indictment by a federal grand jury and was released on 50000 dollar bond. Indictments total six felonies and two misdemeanors charging 215080.45 dollars in government tax claims with investigation spanning two years. Federal agents say income claimed totaled 1088654.84 for 1924 to 1929 but did not represent Capone’s full income. United States Attorney George E Q Johnson says he is ready for the supreme test against Capone. A lieutenant Sam Guzik begins a year and day sentence for tax violation, and agents announce a break up of a Capone liquor syndicate with 20 arrests in Illinois and Iowa. Capone surrendered in a natty Firem suit and hat and declined comment on a plea of guilty.
