Flying Grandad Conquers Ocean Flight Despite Mint Tea Sickness

Max Conrad, 56, completed a 56 hour 38 minute 7638 mile solo flight from Casablanca to Los Angeles in a Piper Comanche promoting the aircraft maker. He recalls mint tea aboard causing nausea but recovered to land safely in Los Angeles with the route via Corpus Christi El Paso and Phoenix. He surpassed the previous Manila to Oregon record set in 1958 by W L Boling. Conrad, a former band leader now a world roaming airplane transport pilot and songwriter, notes the takeoff was the flight's riskiest moment due to a full load of 500 gallons of fuel.

Able’s Body To Return For Temporary Kansas Display

The space monkey Able, seven pounds, will be stuffed and sent to Ward’s Natural Science Establishment in Rochester to be displayed briefly in Lawrence and Independence before final burial at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington. Senator Frank Carlson said Able will be shipped back to Kansas since she was born there, though the Smithsonian holds permanent possession and will oversee a temporary local display.
