The nation mobilizes for a massive registration drive for men aged 18 to 31, with Kansas and neighboring states expecting high numbers. The process, run by the Department of Justice and aided by local vigilance, will precede any draft, as registrants are numbered for potential selection by lot.
Registration in Douglas county began with a rush this morning but proceeded without incident. Officials report no disturbances and precincts in Douglas and Lawrence are operating efficiently, though the coin registration board cannot yet judge the percentage of per-2024.
The county expects around 2,334 men to register based on official Washington estimates. Currently about 700 men of military age are already enlisted and will not register. Complete registration tallies are expected late tonight.
A Lawrence city commission meeting is set for tomorrow morning to vote on the ordinance granting the interurban line 2 franchise. The draft notice cited June 5 as the vote date with no protests filed, and officials expect the ordinance to pass as a formality.
Loyal members traveled far to attend Ottawa muster as Battery B of the Kansas National Guard joins state service. Capt. W. A. Pattison commends efforts, 148 in line, total enlistment now 165, six rejected, more recruiting planned until war strength is reached. Other Ottawa enlistments from Louis Fink and out-of-town members strengthen the unit ahead of War Department recognition. Adjutant General Martin conducts another war-strength muster in Pittsburg.
Hon. William Culbertson, tarff commission member, will visit Lawrence on June 12. He will address the University summer school in the forenoon and dine with the Chamber of Commerce at the noon luncheon. He will speak on the tariff work related to the war and future goals of the commission.
President Wilson received a tremendous ovation from Confederate veterans at the national chapel opening of the twenty seventh annual reunion. He praised both sides for heroic deeds and noted pride in origin from the Dixie stock.
The assistant pastor of the First Baptist Church Swanston NJ delivered a strong Sunday morning sermon. Jennings was born in Bronson Kansas and is a Ottawa University graduate.
The Board of Education plans to guard pupil health more closely next year by using school buildings and equipment in every useful way. Lessons in canning and related health measures will be emphasized to prepare students for wartime readiness.
The board authorized using school buildings when not in use for regular classes to support national war efforts. Facilities may host meetings drills registration census relief distribution and other lawful uses with no charge except extra fuel light and janitorial costs. Demonstrations in cooking will be held at the high school.
A parade by Civil War veterans and National Guard units, forming at Eighth and Kentucky and moving to the park via Sixth Street Massachusetts and Seventh Street. The Washington Post Grand Army led the march, with the veteran drum corps providing music. Few guardsmen participated due to short notice and Haskell’s exam day keeping the battalion home.
A former Lawrence resident Mr A Radford died yesterday in Blackwell Oklahoma. The funeral will be at 9 o'clock Thursday morning from Funk Chapel with Reverend Hargett in charge. Interment will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery.
The Douglas County Fair runs September 14 to 21 with two new features: a School District float display using only locally raised products and a calf and pig contest for youth. Floats, prizes from 8 to 40 dollars, and districts within twenty miles of Lawrence eligible. The war is seen as improving the fair with better entries and more races to handle crowds.
Serious rioting by convicts at Joliet state prison broke out this morning after an order restricting visitors to relatives. Five buildings were set ablaze, two guards and several convicts injured, and about 200 inmates remained confined behind a fenced wall as National Guardsmen and First Infantry units moved in to restore order. Major J V Cleinnen led the forces with no orders to fire to kill. The paint shop and chapel were destroyed though three buildings were saved.
A severe hail and wind storm swept Cloud county between Concordia and Hannum overnight and into this morning leveling crops and damaging farm buildings. In Lang northeast of Emporia five inches of water covered streets. No deaths reported. Concordia experienced street flooding from seven this morning as reports indicate six to twelve inches of water in city streets.
Six German destroyers engage Commodore Tyrwhitt's squadron in a running fight in which a German destroyer was sunk and another damaged. The British fleet bombarded the Ostend base on the Belgian coast with no losses reported. In France the German gains northwest of Froidmont were retaken by French forces, with ongoing artillery on the Aisne front and in Champagne.
City water department reports ample supply as wells reach full capacity. Superintendent E. H. Dunmite announced the big low pressure pump will be activated to fill settling basins, after being idle due to low water levels.

Lawrence prepares to merge Bell and Home telephone companies by mid September though war restrictions slow equipment imports. two headquarters will be combined, fewer buildings used, and new switchboards phones and transmitters will be installed as patron service expands under the unified system. local canvass reaches about one third of 4500 patrons while bridge wiring and under river cable work proceed with delays.
Paris June 5 The chamber of deputies votes 450 to 0 in secret session to demand peace terms including the liberation of conquered territories and the return of Alsace Lorraine to France. It urges a league of nations and pledges united action with allies to achieve reparations and justice for invaded regions.
The class of 1897 decided the 175 memorial fund should fund an arch on Mount Oread to begin the project, acknowledging更多 funds will be needed later to complete the structure and taking pride in starting the movement.
The funeral of Mrs. Lucy Dix Kin near will be held at 2:30 oclock tomorrow afternoon from the home of her father W. Flintom 745 Ohio street. Mrs. Kinnear died in Bonner Springs Sunday evening. Interment will be in Oak Hall cemetery.
The funeral for Mrs. AL Young will be held at 4 40 tomorrow from her daughter Mrs. Max Wilhelm Jr 607 Louisiana Street. Burial follows at Oak Hill Cemetery.
The funeral for Mrs Susan Torrey will be held from the home of Mrs M F Lloyd at 1922 Barker Avenue at nine o'clock. Burial will be in Oskaloosa.
A marriage license was issued yesterday to Walter N. Nelson and Merlin L. Davidson, both residents of Whiting, Kansas.
War disruptions halt oil leasing and drilling plans in Douglas County as contractors fail to obtain drill casings and other materials. Leases from farmer Anticline transferred to Locke and McMahan and All-American Oil. initial derrick set, drilling may start May 1 but delays persist. Leases require completion within twelve months or payment of penalties. labor costs rise for crew erecting the derrick.
At the weekly Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Fort Scott Hon. AL M. Keene outlined wartime demands for electricians and medical professionals while praising local industry growth. Speakers including John W. Games and Dean Butler urged unity, publicity, and steady teamwork as nation mobilizes. Filipina aide F. C. Barba announced for departure, with members planning a token gift in appreciation.
