The Clinton storm’s toll rises as three people die with the body of John Bachellor recovered after a house blast and continuous search ongoing. Bachellor’s death follows a collapse during the storm, with authorities tracing the final hours and the fatal impact on nearby homes.
A violent tornado last night struck west Douglas County near Clinton, killing John Bachellor, Mrs Green Monroe, and Elva Weaver, with Green Monroe badly injured. W J Cummings Sr and Mrs Hamil also hurt. extensive farm buildings, crops, and local structures damaged across a wide path north to the Kaw River and south toward Marion township. The Clinton area suffered near total destruction including the Presbyterian church and Union Hall, with many homes and barns blown away and bodies found in wreckage.
A powerful tornado path ripped through farms along the California road area, damaging houses and barns on the Rudiger, Bigsby, Kirby, Ridley, Schooley, Daniels, and Andersen properties. The storm destroyed an eighty acre orchard, shredded peach and cherry trees, and carried a barn roof nearly a quarter mile. Long distance telephone lines and Western Union wires were knocked out across Lawrence, Bonner Springs, and nearby towns, with crews restoring service overnight. The path measured about a mile and a quarter wide, moving from southwest to northeast, with residents taking shelter in cellars as the wind struck around 6:15 PM.
Severe weather tore through Kansas and Missouri causing extensive damage across multiple counties. Emergency crews assess wreckage as residents start reporting property losses and minor injuries. Authorities warn of continuing storm threats and urge caution in affected towns.
Severe statewide storms in Kansas and western Missouri killed at least eight people and injured forty to fifty. The Wabaunsee Shawnee and Jefferson counties region bore the worst impact with four dead, while Richmond Missouri reported two women and a child killed. Extensive crop damage and widespread communication outages accompanied the devastation.
Thirty members of Battery A Kansas National Guard left Topeka for Menoken by order of Adjutant General Martin to guard residents after a tornado struck nearby. Telephone reports to Governor Capper say guardsmen are needed to deter alleged thievery by outsiders arriving in the affected area.
Tommy Ferguson was tried before Justice John Clark yesterday afternoon on a charge of petty larceny. He pled guilty to stealing a necklace and was fined twenty dollars plus costs. Unable to pay, he has taken up residence in the county jail for a short period.
Marriage licenses were issued this morning to Carl David Kelley of Lawrence and Ethel May Frankfor of Concordia, Antonio Reyes and Elocinda Domingues, both of Lawrence.
The Acacia fraternity house will serve as a honeymoon bower this summer. Ross F. Clayton, a University of Kansas journalism accountant, and bride Marguerite McVey returned from Hill City, Kansas. They will reside at the Acacia house with W. O. Hake and Lara Gilmore Hake, married last week in Minneapolis. A third couple, Clay and Mrs. Fiske, have been married for about two years. Fiske was a Kansas University football squad member last fall.
William Jennings Bryan rode the interurban from Kansas City to near Lawrence but wind damaged trolley poles between Bismarck and Lawrence. Passengers, including Bryan, finished the journey in taxicabs as the service was crippled by windstorms and earlier wire troubles. The line resumed usual service later.
Ten Lawrence grade school boys travel to Elmdale Kansas for a two week YMCA camp. Paul Evans will accompany the delegation from the City YMC A. The group includes George Lynn Jim Weed Edwin Heathman John Gavitt James Barrow Franklin Barrow Edwin Young Carol McNish and Hollis Brown. T H Vaughn and C C Hartford assist with the camp open to state groups all summer.
German attacks along the French front around Lens fail to gain ground as British artillery supports advances on Greenland Hill. In the air, British pilots downed German planes from a raid over England, with several aircraft shot down or forced to land. Casualties were reported in the day's actions.
Washington reports a German submarine likely sunk by an armed American steamer after a 90 minute running fight. Thirty five submarine shots and twenty five from the steamer were exchanged before the sub vanished after a final decisive hit.
Yesterday's temperature 63.5 degrees with today at about 60. Rainfall 0.52 inches recorded. Forecast calls for fair tonight and Thursday, with warmer conditions on Thursday.
Mrs Sally Thayer of Kansas City donates a $150000 art collection to the University of Kansas in memory of William B Thayer and to encourage study of fine arts. The gift includes 5000 plus objects, 28 modern oil paintings, 1800 Japanese prints, textiles, ceramics, and lacquer wares, valued at $150000 overall and open to public and students.
In the divorce suit Rachell L. Mathie versus Clarence C. Mathie Judge C A Smart denied the divorce. Custody of the minor child awarded to Mrs Mathie with monthly installments to the court for her until exhausted. Afterward defendant to pay $10 monthly for child support. Court recessed after two days of evidence in Fuller versus Terrell still on contract. no decision announced.
Reports from Clinton indicate Lucy Christie has been missing since the storm. She was driving home and may have been caught in the storm’s path, with no confirmation of her arrival or safety as details remain unclear.
As Board of Equalization the city commission will sit to equalize taxes for three paving projects on June 12. The sites are Winona Avenue Tl Nois Street and the alley west of New York Street in the 1000 block.
Louis Pieratt remains semi conscious after being struck by a Ford truck last week. He is resting in Simmons hospital with a skull fracture near the base of the brain and only slight improvement to date.
In Lawrence a meeting to form a permanent Kaw Valley Milk Producers Association will be held at the Chamber of Commerce Friday at 2 o'clock. A. L. Neale of Kansas State Agricultural College will speak and aid organization. Farmers from Douglas County and southern Jefferson County have been invited to join. Neale will tour local farms giving dairy building and livestock care advice over Friday and Saturday.
Douglas county reports 1 621 men signed registration blanks with total county registration at 1 918, city 719 and rural 1 202. Officials note militia recruitment centered in Lawrence, with no incidents or trouble recorded during registration day. partial storm delays and downed wires slowed reports to sheriff’s office.
Hon A M Keene speaker of the Kansas house urged wholehearted government support during the crisis. He called for service on the firing line and purchase of war bonds to fund the war, while the First Regiment band provided music and Pinckney school pupils staged a flag drill.
The city commission voted today to grant an interurban road franchise in line with prior notice. The company is expected to formally accept, making the agreement binding on both parties, and no objections to the franchise ordinance were filed.
William Jennings Bryan spoke at WKU’s forty fifth commencement urging absolute loyalty to the federal government as the nation enters war. He pressed support for Red Cross and Y M C A, urged bonds, food conservation, and emphasized duty to government society and God. The talk followed his war outlook and a large audience at Robinson Gym.
