Kansan testifies in Manila on Burnham hostage case
A Kansan testified in Manila about the 377 day hostage ordeal of Martin and Gracia Burnham. The June 7 2002 raid left Gracia with a thigh wound and killed Martin and a Filipino nurse Edibo Rah Yap, ending a long hostage crisis that spurred counterterrorism training for Philippine forces. Burnham described gunbattles hunger and forced marches in her book and alleged misuse of ransom funds and links to Osama bin Laden. She named Abu Sulaiman and described enrollment of her husband in a ransom message and a rusty dog chain used to shackle him. Burnham has three children Jeff Mindy and Zach. Philippine forces later pushed the guerrillas from Basilan, reducing their numbers to about 300.
